Route Terrain Woodland track, open, grassy fellside

Ordnance Survey Maps Landranger 90 (Penrith & Keswick)

The conquest of Great Mell Fell should faze no one; the fell is a simple, rounded dome easy and delightful of access. A straightforward amble to the top and back is handsomely rewarding itself. But turning the walk to the summit into either of the circular routes shown here involves an unavoidable, very steep descent. Great Mell Fell and close neighbour Little Mell Fell share an interesting geology as carboniferous rocks form a comglomerate in which pebbles of skiddaw slate, Borrowdale volvanies and Coniston limestone, among others, are set in a sandy matric carried here by powerful floods and, resistant to erosion, they now form the smooth rounded fells visible today.

The walk begins at a rough track leaving the road not far from Brownrigg Farm. Set off along the track, and continnue past a National Trust Mell Fell sign at a fate, as this is not thw ay to go, in spite of it being rather inviting. Stay on the stony track as far as the next date on the right. Pass through the gate and then bear left alongside a fence, climbing gently. For a while the path is flanked on the right by trees, but as these finally fall back you can leave the fence-side path by branching right onto a steeply ascending path.
