I can't believe other reviewers found this book so bad. My father had a static caravan on Dartmoor, so I've spent a lot of time on the moor and found this book indispensable. I now live in a little village just off the moor and I still use the walks. I even proposed to my fiancée on walk 22. The walk along the leat was really lovely.
How somebody can slag this book off so badly beats me. Alright, occasionally some of the directions are a bit vague, but I've never been lost, just a little confused. Besides, the maps in the book are taken directly from the Explorer OL28 OS map for Dartmoor, so if you can read a map you should be fine. I've never needed to use my map, or a compass, although I do take them on the high moor walks just in case. I've been around all but a few of the walks in this book and I'll do the rest when the opportunity arises. I can safely say I've enjoyed all but one of them, that being walk 21. The fort at the end of it was overgrown, the walk itself wasn't up to the usual high standard and I was having a grumpy day.
If you can find a better set of walks for Dartmoor I'll eat my hat. This book has taken me to some of the most beautiful places on the moor. There's a walk for everyone, with 3 difficulty levels, depending on how much time you have or how fit you feel. I generally get around them a bit quicker than is quoted in the book, but then normally I don't want to. Well done OS, without you walking could never be such a pleasure.
