Review

"To sum up. If you are fed up of reading yet another recent story from the front line in Irag or Afghanistan, this book is entirely worthy of a place on your bookshelf." -- AlienFTM, Arsse

Product Description

44 Parachute Brigade was formed later that year, with the need for a specialist Pathfinder Company patently clear. Into the ranks came professional veterans from the UK, USA, Australasia, Rhodesia and elsewhere, from such Special Forces units as the SAS, Selous Scouts and the RLI. 'This is their book, a collection of stories about the founding and deployment of a unit of 'Foreign Legionnaires', from different parts of the world who became welded together into a remarkable combat unit, unsurpassed by any other South African Defence Force unit in their positive and aggressive approach to battle. For me it was an honour to have faced incoming lead together with them'.

Excellent book on one of those "odd" units... 29 April 2011
By James D. Crabtree - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
During the war on terror that South Africa fought against its Marxist neighbors they established many specialized units and weapons. One such unit was the Pathfinder Company of the 44th Parachute Brigade. Following an airborne operation in Cassinga, Angola it was determined that a special unit, on par with the British and U.S. pathfinders, was needed in order to provide accurate jump information and to guide paratroopers to usable jump zones. Thus was born the "Philistines," a unit which resemble a foreign legion, including as it did British, American, Rhodesian and other nationalities. The short but colorful history of this unit and its actions against SWAPO and FAPLA are well worth reading, but mostly the book discusses small-unit actions and personalities involved in the fighting in Angola.

Forgotten wars that make a difference in current history 9 Dec 2010
By Lang Price - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
This book about a small space and time in SW Africa gives a realistic insight into a long struggle against the marxist globalist effort to marginalize the free world effort to stave off the effects of a godless world view of dictators. Their worldview has no respect for the individual or the nation state comprised of freedom loving people who want to be left alone to work out their own destiny.

Col. Breytenbach, Capt. Peak, CSM MacAleese, CSM Croukamp and all the others Ouens risked all to break the back of the aggressors and their supporters that comprised the SWAPO and FAPLA insurgency (I include the many useful idiots in the global press and the political opponents in the media and government as fellow Quislings).

The Big Picture is about the clash of Worldviews--liberty and individual freedom against any despotic claim to authority.

We are in the end of the present age where the George Soros type of megalomaniac mind is using money and political influence to squelch the flame of the individual mind to dominate the world for personal aggrandizement. The flame of liberty needs to oppose this trend with more than respectful disagreement. They only understand the effect of the determined rifleman against their idea of "World Peace".

This book is a foretelling of the insidious movement that now encircles the globe. It is an obvious if obtuse call for the individual to rise up and defend the principles of our God-given rights as creatures of His creation. Don't confuse the state with the individual or you will live under tyranny.
This small slice of history is a warning for the reader. Don't confuse this book with the past. It is all about the present and the future.

Angola, revisited... 19 Jun 2011
By John F. Moore - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
The war in Angola garnered some American press attention, in one case because an American mercenary fighting for UNITA was captured and executed by the communists.

The South Africans were very effective in combating Cuban, Russian and East German troops. I have a friend who fought with this unit and I also spent quite a bit of time in Angola during the late 80's and early 90's flying C-130's around the country, so any military history regarding the various Angolan and Southwest Africa/Namibia campaigns are of particular interest to me.

For those wishing to gain knowledge about a very effective South African commando unit, I can recommend this book quite highly. My friend is pictured in the book, but I will respect his privacy and not name him. He is a very accomplished individual and had a successful career with the Pathfinders.
