Book Description

17 Aug 2010 Pathfinder Chronicles Supplement
In the outcast city of Kaer Maga, your business is your own, and no ware is too dangerous or taboo to find a buyer. Within the walls of the ancient, ruined fortress, refugees and criminals from every nation disappear into the crowds of gangs and monsters. Leech-covered bloatmages haggle with Sweettalkers - religious zealots who sew their own lips shut - while naga crime lords squeeze self-mutilating troll prophets for protection money. And these are just the residents, not the fearsome beasts barely contained in the mysterious dungeons beneath the streets, held at bay by the elite rangers known as the Duskwardens. Welcome to the City of Strangers, a haven of freedom and independence for all - presuming you survive. Inside this comprehensive, 64-page sourcebook you'll find everything you need to know about running a game in Kaer Maga, including information and notable locations for all 11 districts; a history of the city, and the bizarre ruined monument that houses it; details on the countless gangs and factions within the city; a layer-by-layer guide to the dungeons beneath the city, and the echoes of lost races and magic that still guard them; plus new monsters, magic items, feats, and more.

5.0 out of 5 stars A genuinely different city... 18 Feb 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
...with a culture and flavour all its own. Kaer Maga is a genuinely original creation which really is distinctive and, whilst there is little here ready to run, provides inspiration for whole campaigns. If there is a quibble, the very remoteness of the city means that it is not necessarily a good location for a campaign which will wander much beyond the city's walls and depths. On the other hand, there is more than enough ere to keep GMs and adventurer's busy.

5.0 out of 5 stars A very flexible setting 30 Jun 2012
Format:Paperback
So far of all the chronicles describing an area, city or country this has to be my favourite. If you want to start out, want a place you can spend some time to try out Golarion without investing in a whole world - this would be a good start.

Kaer Maga - the City of Strangers is an artificial ancient place in a hexagonal wall with nobody knowing how old the place actually is. Having been used as a prison originally it developed into a city for outsiders after the Starfall.

As background this means you have a complete microcosmos in a single city. With different areas from slums to the wealthy, intrigue, factions from good to evil and a large mainly unexplored dungeon below the city you can spend a lot of time for city adventures with the occasional scenario in the dungeons below.

The books starts with the introduction that includes the history, followed by 24 pages describing the different areas of the city - and different means quite literally different. It follows 18 pages on people, the races you encounter, important families, factions etc. This also includes some pages about the undercity.

Just to give you an idea of strangeness - there is the temple of troll augurs that predict the future by cutting open their own body and reading their entrails.

The book finishes with a page on random encounters, the bloat Mage prestige class, and information about a humanoid race of oracles first encountered here and gone into the dungeons ahead of the star fall.

So whom to recommend this book for? If you are a GM and looking for a city setting with lots of potential then you won't be disappointed. Also go for it for a good read of a strange fantasy setting.
Be warned - the dungeons below are not well described and this is a city setting.

5.0 out of 5 stars Kaer Maga? You need this book 15 Jan 2013

I just started a campaign that begins in Kaer Maga and I have put this book to good use. Its provided me with some great bits of information to pass on to my players as well as some hooks. I haven't read it from cover to cover yet, mostly just the sections that have the most relevance at the moment but I can say if you're are going to have any involvement in Kaer Maga you should strong consider picking this up.
