Book Description

14 Aug 2012 Pathfinder Campaign Setting
Known as the City of Monuments for its jaw-dropping skyline of ancient ruins, magnificent towers, and stunning sculptures, Magnimar embodies the spirit of Varisia more than any other great city. Yet with Magnimar's explosive growth over the last century, life in the City of Monuments has become an adventure in and of itself. With strange monsters lurking amid the ancient ruins that form the city's foundation, roving bands of thieves, smugglers, and murderers battling for control over the city's alleys, and the increasingly decadent attitudes of its oldest families, Magnimar lies at a crossroads. Will it succeed despite the obstacles thrown in its path, or is the City of Monuments doomed to crumble under the pressure of its own runaway success? This Pathfinder sourcebook explores the city of Magnimar (first featured in the now classic Rise of the Runelords Adventure Path) in great detail. Each city district has its own unique flavor and role, and comes with pages of details on industries and institutions, leisure and markets, and politics and entertainment. Dozens of shops, taverns, guildhalls, and more await discovery, many of which are presented with additional adventure hooks, memorable NPCs, and inspirational bits of lore. Examinations of regions ripe for adventuring or sinister groups worthy of defeat, along with a robust bestiary featuring commonly encountered NPCs or monsters closely associated with the City of Monuments completes this book, which will be an invaluable addition to your upcoming Shattered Star Adventure Path.

5.0 out of 5 stars Easily adaptable... 24 Nov 2012

...but with real colour! Magnimar is a city which can be a great base for adventures in Golarion or which can easily be adapted to another setting. Built around a looming, gigantic and ruined bridge from the lost Empire of Thassilon the city contains everything charcaters could need, including hooks for many adventures. Highly recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars Short, but still pretty sweet 18 Feb 2013

The source book is divided into 3 sections. As usual, the interior art and cartography are well done.
Section One: Representing the vast majority of the book, this section provides an overview of the city itself, broken down into its various districts. Each district has 4 pages devoted to it, containing a district map with about a dozen sites and adventure ideas. The main weakness here is a lack of specific information (stats) on most of the city's important individuals and interior maps of any of the buildings. Want to know how the thieves guild is mapped out? Too bad. DM's are going to have to do the heavy lifting if they want to use the city for a campaign. However, there are a lot of good ideas contained in the pages(which can also be easily be cribbed for more detailed metropolises like Waterdeep), and the overall theme/motif of the city is well done.
Section Two: A short section on Plots and Threats to the city. Again, good creative fodder, but few details.
Section Three: A short section of monsters and generic city NPCs (guards, thieves, etc.). This is the most "crunch" heavy section of the book and there are some interesting creatures here.
Overall, I think the city should have gotten the hardback treatment. You get a good overview and if you are playing Rise of the Runelords, I'd almost consider it essential. If they'd added another 100 pages, this would be a 5 star product.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent suppliment 9 Oct 2012

Magnimar has a wealth of information on one of the Big Three in Varisia. If you happen to have Pathfinder Adventure Path: Rise of the Runelords Anniversary Edition, or are planning on picking it up, I'd really recommend Magnimar, City of Monuments as well, as it serves to flesh out the campaign. Even as a standalone product, it's worth picking up for the details about the city.

Was a good sized book with good content and worth the purchase. It really helped my game in the Rise of the Rune Lords campaign.
5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Supplement 7 May 2013

This book is a MUST-HAVE for any Varisia Campaign (especially the APs that start or come here)

This city is rich with history and lore, and even adventure hooks. I'd daresay this book has enough information to base an entire campaign around just this city.
5.0 out of 5 stars Way too much to take in at once 29 April 2013

This guide is amazing for fleshing out this city. You can design an adventure around a single line description from this book. Such a big city with a lot of history, and they did a really good job of making it feel like what a character would feel like walking into it.
