3.0 out of 5 stars nice ideas for walks but ambiguous directions 14 Aug 2012
Verified Purchase
we bought this to go walking in Wales. It is full of different walks within the whole area with about 30 or so to choose from and can definitely cover all sorts of abilities. They vary from easy 2 hours to the longer 5-5.5 hour walks. It is nicely split into sections to help with choosing. The timings of the walks are fairly accurate but if you are fit you could probably shave off a half hour and have lunch and not get lost! The maps of the walks are useful addition and complement an OS map to help with navigation. We walked the Waterfall trek and the Sugar Loaf walk.
the reason we have only given this book 3 stars is because the directions for which I would probably only give a 2 star rating . The directions are actually very ambiguous and quite vague in places. We are pretty experienced walkers with a good sense of direction and we were walking with an OS map and we got lost on a number of occasions on both walks. Maybe it was bad luck but seemed strange that it was both walks, we also met another couple following the book who were also struggling in places!
Some of the walks in the Brecons aren't particularly well signposted either and the stiles are over grown in places so when the book is vague and there are no signposts or other walkers we did actually find ourselves unknowingly trespassing on private land. I would use it again as I own it I would be prepared to get lost but i probably wouldnt buy it again!

5.0 out of 5 stars Good 13 Jun 2014

I really like these Pathfinder books. They contain a decent selection of walks, have the OS 1:25000 scale maps of the walks instead of handdrawn ones which look a bit homemade in other books. The timings given are pretty accurate for the length of the walk. I didn't follow the instructions step by step as I didn't want to walk round with my head in a book, but reading after appeared about right. Good series.
