Product Description

Using rare news footage and interviews from the BBC, British Pathé and other news services, this
extraordinary series provides a unique year by year look at what was making the news in that
most colourful of decades - The 1980s.
With a whole hour long show on each year, the result is an amazing insight into the decade of Margaret
Thatcher and Ronald Regan, Yuppies, big hair, New Romantics, Perestroika and designer everything!
The decade was a time of huge contrasts for the United Kingdom. The unabated rise of capitalist culture in
the ideal of a share and property-owning democracy was in stark contrast to the privations of the year-long
miner s strike and record unemployment - contributing factors to the ever widening North-South divide.
Against the backdrop of the ongoing cold war, British troops were at war with Argentina over the Falklands
Islands and, closer to home, civil unrest in Northern Ireland continued to claim lives.
Riots in Brixton and Toxteth brought anarchy to British city centres. The whole world was shocked by the
Chernobyl disaster, the Challenger explosion and people across the globe mourned the murder of John
Lennon.
This collection also covers such memorable events as the great storm of 1987, the Royal Wedding, the first
London Marathon, the introduction of the pound coin and a streaker at Twickenham.
Relive all these events and many, many more with A Year To Remember
The 1980s .
TOTAL RUNNING TIME - 9 hours, 50 Mins (3 disc set).

3.0 out of 5 stars Interesting 26 Aug 2013
By Richard
These DVDS are a pretty "no frills" look at the 80's. I agree with the earlier review which said that the picture quality is not the best and that it appears that the footage is taken from a tape compilation source (the narration at the end of each disc does refer to "a series of videocassettes" - so it looks like this is indeed the case). Having said that, the footage on offer is rather interesting as it does tend to look at all aspects of the decade and not just the usual cliched 80's events (although these are included too). So there are a lot of international political events covered, as well as domestic (UK) industrial crises and politics - many of which I'd forgotten about. This is not a complilation to watch for a night of warm 80's nostalgia but more for an overview of the social and political climate of the time.
I do intend to buy some of the other DVDs in the series as I think they are good value for money if you are interested in this kind of thing.

The picture quality really isn't great even considering the archive nature of the material. It seems the clips were copied from an old analogue Betacam compilation tape rather than from a proper first generation video source (ie. from a proper archive).

As a result, the interlaced nature of the video footage hasn't translated well into the DVD format either - resulting in blockiness in many areas.

The majority of the clips would have been sourced from the BBC when this compilation tape was originally made. Since the clips are entirely mainstream in nature, it's hard to see why the Amazon description refers to them as 'rare'.

The end of the each year is marked by a dated 1980s style 3D graphic with the title 'NEWSBRIEF from Newsbrief Corporation'. Is this the proper name of the compilation?

Rather disappointing.
