'Sufism is a school of Spiritual states, not discourse, and a Sufi is something to become, not something to merely read about'...
So begins this book written by the recently deceased Dr Javad Nurbakhsh, Master of the Path of the Nimatullahi Sufi Order.
That being said, this book covers succintly and with reference to carefully selected teachers quotes handpicked by Dr Nurbakhsh- who was in his latter years a dedicated Scholar and prolific writer of books on Sufism- the aims of Sufism are addressed with a definition of Sufis, Sufiologists and Master and Disciple.
The Manners of Sufis, the view of time, love both Islamic and Sufi are all addressed.
The Principles of the path are laid out with reference to Remembrance, contemplation, meditation and self examination.
This book therefore is in reality a practical guide to an Initiate to this particular order of Sufism, and will be of interest to outsiders looking in with interest, wishing to see a living breathing practice in action, and the high expectations placed on the shoulders of those Aspirants.

Priceless 24 July 2006
By nobody son of nobody - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
The Path reveals the true heart of Islam and is a priceless handbook on the actual aim and method of a traditional Sufi order. Dr. Javad Nurbakhsh's work translates very well into English and offers clear and concise guidance for traveling a spiritual path. Nor frills, bells and whistles, Nurbakhsh reveals the Truth as it Is. Highly recommended!

Best Intro 18 Mar. 2013

If you are already a Darvish of any Tariqat, but especially the nimatullahi or other Persian orders, you will truly enjoy this book. If not a Darvish, you will learn quite a bit. If you are a lover of Sufi poetry, yet not an initiate, this book provides quite a bit of background. And if you are wanting to know the meaning for the deep symbology in the Sufi poems, the Master has written a large series of books describing it in great detail. This is absolutely the best introduction to Sufism and basic practices. Ya Haqq!

A gem of an offering 6 Feb. 2013
By Cliff - Published on Amazon.com

This is a beautifully and thoughtfully written book which presents the basic tenets of Sufism in a clear and understandable way to readers not familiar with the Sufi path. In a series of essays, Dr Nurbakhsh explains not only the philosophical underpinnings of the discipline but also the practices which have been taught by Sufi masters for centuries and still followed today. An inspirational, thought provoking and highly recommended read.
