PRAISE OF THIS BOOK
To every honest reader that may purchase, hire, or receive this book, and to the reviewers also (to whom it is of triple profit), greeting-and whatever else can be had for nothing.
If you should ask how this book came to be written, it was in this way. One day as I was wandering over the world I came upon the valley where I was born, and stopping there a moment to speak with them all-when I had- argued politics with the grocer, and played the great lord with the notary-public, and had all but made the carpenter a Christian by force of rhetoric-what should I note (after so many years) but the old tumble-down and gaping church, that I love more than mother-church herself, all scraped, white, rebuilt, noble and new, as though it had been finished yesterday. Knowing very well that such a change had not come from the

About the Author

Hilaire Belloc (1870–1953) was an Anglo-French writer and historian who became a naturalized British subject in 1902. He was one of the most prolific writers in England during the early twentieth century. He is most notable for his Catholic faith, which had a strong impact on most of his works and his writing collaboration with G. K. Chesterton. Belloc wrote on myriad subjects, from warfare to poetry to the many current topics of his day. He has been called one of the Big Four of Edwardian Letters, along with H.G.Wells, George Bernard Shaw, and G. K. Chesterton, all of whom debated each other into the 1930s. Belloc was closely associated with Chesterton, and Shaw coined the term Chesterbelloc for their partnership. Asked once why he wrote so much,] he responded, "Because my children are howling for pearls and caviar." Belloc observed that "The first job of letters is to get a canon," that is, to identify those works which a writer looks upon as exemplary of the best of prose and verse. For his own prose style, he claimed to aspire to be as clear and concise as "Mary had a little lamb." His best travel writing has secured a permanent following. --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

Don't be put off by Roamer's review - this is the proper, illustrated article. If you've never read any of Belloc's non-fiction start with this or with "The Cruise of The Nona", or with "The Four Men". Once you've become accustomed to his digressive style you find yourself in the company of one of the finest and most restless minds in European literature. You have to allow Belloc's words and thoughts to wash over you, and to accept that he was writing from a period (before WW1 in this case) which had a different moral framework. But there are great riches here, and I'm an atheist, not a Catholic as was Belloc. I'd say if you enjoy Trollope (Anthony) you'll enjoy this. And it'll make you think.

Hilaire Belloc continues to delight with his erudite mixture of humour, information and profound reflection. It is just a pity that this particular edition is so difficult to handle

An Incomplete Book 24 Aug 2010
Format:Paperback
When I purchased this book, I expected to have a 'small sketch' at the beginning of every chapter, but it was blank ! The author was an amateur artist and every sketch had a significance for each chapter ! I had a Penguin copy ( since lost ) with such sketches, the sketch added to the pleasure of reading this book . I will not be buying from Amazon for a while, if ever - the book I bought was not described accurately, and was a disappointment.
