Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review
Country life doesn't prove quite so simple for the sophisticated city folk in Pastures Nouveaux, best-selling author Wendy Holden's hilarious "comedy of country manors". Although some of the rural inhabitants are poor as church mice, the majority are not and all pursue the same recreational activities (money and sex) as their urban cousins.

The belle of the country set is Rosie, a freelance illustrator, who (originally) is not desperately seeking a man, marriage or babies. In fact, natural beauty Rosie doesn't seem to have a problem with men at all. Although she has a partner (Mark is an arrogant journalist whose work involves dishing the dirt on the famous), he is quite obviously unsuitable for such a nice girl. It doesn't take long (page two) before Rosie thinks there must be more to life. So when Mark is given his own column about, wait for it, the travails of sophisticated city folk who move to the hilariously simple "country", she is soon romping with a very mixed set from the nouveaux-riches Samantha and Guy to a farmer fatale and a mysterious millionaire.

Thanks to her previous jobs on national newspapers and up-market glossies, Holden slickly draws her caricatures of urban types from the single-minded financiers, for whom extra-marital sex is a hobby, to their stick-insect, interior design-obsessed wives to vacuous, celebrity-sniffing media types. Champagne D'Vyne, Holden's posh-totty socialite and star of previous tales, even makes a cameo appearance (as herself, nach). If you are looking for a light read, nouvelle literature that won't stretch you too much, read on! --Carey Green --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Review
'Pacy pastiche of city dwellers "gone country"...packed with puns... Holden has produced an entertaining novel, bursting with a large cast of Diblyesque characters, which will no doubt delight fans of her two previous books' (Daily Mail )

'Clever, naughty and basically affectionate and good-natured.... a comic romp engineered with aplomb and dash... will have fans glued' (Sunday Times )

'A very modern romantic comedy... her cultural references are spot-on... an amusing romp through village life' (Mail on Sunday )

'On days of gloom Wendy Holden's novels should be handed round like aspirin. Her new book, Pastures Nouveaux, is guaranteed to bring a smile even to the baddest of moods... Discover the hills are alive with the sound of high jinks in this laugh-a-minute romp' B magazine

'A pun-packed romp' Eve

5.0 out of 5 stars "...and the church bells struck sixteen...", 21 April 2007
By Kona (Emerald City) - See all my reviews
(TOP 50 REVIEWER)
This review is from: Pastures Nouveaux (Paperback)
Artist Rosie hates the noise, crowds, and pressure of living in her cramped London flat, and longs to live in a cozy old cottage nestled in a picturesque village, full of quaint, friendly folk. Her city-loving boyfriend finally agrees to move to the country, and they settle in the town of Eight-Mile Bottom, where a handsome farmer, a reclusive rock star, some eccentric locals will change her life forever.

Told from Rosie's point of view, the story is very funny and at times, quite touching. It's easy to identify with her longing for love and fulfillment, as she charges full-steam ahead in pursuit of her dreams. Sometimes we wish Rosie made better choices, but it's a journey that will put a smile on your face. The story proceeds at a leisurely pace, with plenty of time to get to know all the fascinating characters that live in the village, from the nosy mailman to the hippie family next door. An audio book would definitely be fun to listen to, and, I think it would make a great movie.

"Pastures Nouveaux" is a witty, hip, gossipy fish-out-of-water story that you won't want to put down. Highly recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great summer read!, 13 Jul 2003
By Cindy Cohen (Galveston, Texas, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Pastures Nouveaux (Paperback)
Having how read most of Wendy Holden's comic novels, I must say, she is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors with which to share a sunny afternoon on the beach. While not standing tall in the annals of classic literature, her books have an inventiveness and wit that keep you turning pages over and over again. Also, when first reading her novels, it may seem that they share story lines, but then you turn the page again and find you were entirely mistaken, and that slow smile creeps onto your face. The smile that says, "I was bored with you but now you have my attention!" In short, I loved this novel as well as her others and they're worth the time if you are looking for a good story that will keep you laughing!

3.0 out of 5 stars Nice reading, 7 Feb 2004
This review is from: Pastures Nouveaux (Paperback)
I found Pastures Nouveaux a bit slow. Although I loved Bad Heir Day and I had recently read Fame Fatale which I both loved, Pastures Nouveaux was a little bit of a disappointment. The ending is a bit unpredictable, which is nice and the storyline is an original. If you are a Wendy Holden fan, as I am, then you must read it.
