Nina Simone was born Eunice Wayman on February 21st 1933, in Tryon, South Carolina. She is, for many, the ultimate jazz/blues diva. Few know however, that Ms. Simone holds a doctorate in music, yet was once refused admission to the legendary Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, an event that has forever marked her life. Product Description

CD Description

180 grams audiophile vinyl / Including the hits 'Sinnerman' and 'Nobody Knows You When You're Down And Out'

About the Artist

Nina Simone was one of the best Blues singers of the 20th century. Only someone the likes of Billie Holiday and Bessie Smith had the power to lay a soul bare like she could, as her stripped-down 'Be My Husband' shows. Naked like a field-holler, this song would later capture the imagination of Jeff Buckley and Antony Hegarty. Also on this record are classics such as 'Nobody Knows When You're Down And Out', originally sung by Bessie Smith and Billie Holiday's signature song 'Strange Fruit', as well as a Nina Simone favorite 'Sinnerman'. There are few songs that capture the spirit of religion, redemption and the fear of God as much as this ten-minute race of a song about a man trying to outrun the Devil. It's no wonder it was used in the key-scene of 'The Thomas Crown Affair' and sampled by the likes of Kanye West, Talib Kweli and Felix da Housecat. Nina Simone never, ever disappoints. Re-released for the first time on vinyl since 1965.

Five stars, definitely. Recorded in 1964 and 1965 during Nina Simone's classic New York days, Nina takes on the blues and wins. Opening with 'Be My Husband' recently revived by Anthony and the Johnsons, showing Nina wrestling with all the complexities that can appear even in the most mundane human relationships. Followed by a rousing version of Bessie Smith's 'Nobody Knows You When You're Down and Out'. Another highlight must be 'Strange Fruit' , the well known standard about Klu Klux Klan lynching, and made famous by Billie Holiday, and covered magnificently. Goodness knows this track has been treated to some poor covers , so a relief to hear that its harrowing potency was kept well by Nina Simone. 'Tell Me More and More and Them Some' ( another Billie Holiday number) is chilling and brooding , with some spectacular vocals and keyboards. The release ends with a rousing version of ' Sinnerman', confrontational edgy Gospel, ten minutes . The CD really is awesome and far too short at just under thirty six minutes ( with nine tracks) , but the amount of emotional energy that Nina just poured into the blues is demonstrated well.

This is one of the very best albums I own. On first listen (and even second and third and...) you may think "yeah nice but I dont get any melody or hum along stuff except for sinnerman" But it is one of those exceptional pieces of work that touches you more and more, the more you listen- and there is also THAT VOICE- corny but true. BUY IT NOW.

another of ninas earlier works.what i would call "lightish blues" as compared to her "sing the blues" album (in spite of her powerful and haunting version of "strange fruit")all good tracks plus the incredible 10 mins + "sinnerman".highly recommended
