'Never less than elegant and mischievously sharp' The Times

Product Description

Janet Wakefield is shocked by a call from the Berebury Nursing Home, informing her that her husband's estranged great-aunt, Josephine Short, has passed away. Janet is sure that her husband Bill was the last of Josephine's close family, so she is taken aback when a handsome young man introduces himself at the funeral as Josephine's grandson. Meanwhile Detectives Sloan and Crosby find themselves assigned two rather puzzling cases. First, there's the young woman's body which has been discovered in the River Alm. And then there's the mysterious break-in at Berebury Nursing Home. To be precise, it's Josephine Short's room at the Nursing Home that's been entered, although nothing seems to be missing. What could the intruder have been after? It becomes apparent to Sloan and Crosby that the two cases are connected ...but who can the killer be?

A little Aird told me 21 Dec 2011

I do like the Sloan/Crosby books of Catherine Aird. She is very fair very with her readers-- but sneaky. Most of her books start slowly, a nicely disguised hint here, a crime or two there and as the book progresse, the tension and detection grow faster and faster. Quite a feat! I have read most of her books and cross my heart, I have disccovered the criminal before Sloan only once. Besides, discovering the criminal is not the only pleasure-- the writing and characterization are such joy.
Newcomers to Aird-- I suggest you start at the beginning of the list and work your way through. You will not be disappointed

An old lady - Josephine Short - dies in a nursing home, leaving careful instructions about who is to be informed and where and how her funeral is to take place. Her grandson reappears at the last minute from abroad to attend her funeral. But why did someone break into the nursing home on the night before the funeral? It hardly seems a case worthy of sending out DI Sloan to investigate until one of the mourners at the funeral is found dead in the river.

Miss Short's relatives have never met before and the mourner who ends up in the river is apparently not known to any of the other mourners. Is there a connection between the body and the break in at the nursing home? Sloan and Crosby at first think there is no connection but as more information is revealed the two cases seem intertwined. This is a complex story with some interesting characters. Sloan and Crosby are on top form with Crosby getting more and more outrageous with his less than discreet comments.

There are plenty of red herrings and some easy to miss clues as well. Superintendent Leeyes has been attending more evening classes and is continually demonstrating his more and more arcane knowledge. Sloan refrains from saying what he thinks out of respect for his pension and Crosby's driving has not improved. Life in Calleshire is much as usual. This is in my opinion one of the best of the Sloan and Crosby series and I really enjoyed reading it. The author's ironic descriptions and dialogue are excellent as ever. These understated traditional mysteries are worth reading if you like authors such as Veronica Heley, Hazel Holt, Simon Brett or Rebecca Tope.
