Product Description
Every woman needs her Cathy Kelly time. The warm and moving new novel from the No. 1 Bestselling author of 'Always and Forever'. Keep a secret too long and it will creep out when you least expect it! Behind the shining windows and rose-bedecked gardens of Summer Street, there are lots of secrets. There's the one that hard-working single mother, Faye, hides from her teenage daughter, Amber. And there's the one that thirty-year-old Maggie hides from herself. When fiery Amber decides to throw away her future for love, and when Maggie ends up back home looking after her sick mother, their secrets begin to rise to the surface. The only person on Summer Street who appears to know all the answers is their friend Christie. Wise and kind, she can see into other people's hearts and solve their problems. Except that this time, the secrets she's hidden from her beloved husband and grown up sons are also emerging. When the past comes alive for Maggie, Faye and Christie, they must finally face it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved it, 29 May 2007
By O. Doyle "celticshedevil" (Ireland) - See all my reviews
(TOP 100 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
When you're in the mood for a feel-good book which always ends with a happy ending then you never need to look any further than Cathy Kelly.

Past Secrets is set in the aptly named Summer Street where beyond the rosy gardens lies many a secret.

Faye has put her life on hold for 17yrs so her daughter Amber could have the best of everything but with only weeks to go until the final school exams Amber is ready to throw it all way for rock-star wannabe Karl. Now the secret which Faye has held close to her heart for 17yrs is the only way Faye can get through to Amber....but it's a secret that may destroy their relationship forever.

Maggie and Grey have been together for 5yrs but both have been keeping secrets. Like dominoes falling one secret leads another and Maggie ends up facing the secret she's kept from everyone for more years than she cares to remember.

Christie has always been known as a wise and caring neighbour and friend but she too has been keeping secrets. Now it looks like that secret is about to come out and Christie has to face the demons that have haunted her for 25yrs.

I could happily have kept on reading Past Secrets and was disappointed to have to read the last page.....that's an indication of how this book grabs you. The stories start out independent of each other but tie in nicely and flick from one to the other with consummate ease. In true Cathy Kelly form it reels you in and keeps you turning pages until there are no more...and you always end with a smile on your face. Thoroughly enjoyable.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant, 14 Nov 2006
This review is from: Past Secrets (Hardcover)
I love all of Cahty Kelly's books and this was no exception. It's a great story about the residents of Summer Street and she has a great knack of gently drawing you into the character's lives and getting to know them. A really lovely read that kept me up late into the night reading it and I can't wait ofr her next book.

5.0 out of 5 stars THANK YOU, Cathy!, 7 Jun 2006
By Sissel M. Østdahl "smaureen" (Norway) - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Past Secrets (Hardcover)
I have not quite finished this book. I try to stretch it to last as long as possible. But it is hard; I'm having such a wonderful time.

I have read several reviews of Cathy Kelly's books. Most of them are positive but then there are those who say that this is not important/serious literature. Or that it is nice for a boring long flight or when you are half asleep on a sunny beach.
People in her books are too nice, problems are mostly solved in the end, it's relaxing reading - in other words, happy readers have a too good time for Kelly to be credited as an excellent author. Excellent authors are deep and brooding, they seem to say. Well, at least that is how I interpret it.

Personally, I love opera, but I must say it would have been nice if an opera could at times have a happy ending. The music and the beautiful voices would not have been less entoxicating with a romantic story ending in a huge wedding and pure bliss.

But back to Cathy Kelly and her last "Secrets". A purely wonderful, very intelligent and not the least FUNNY book.
My partly miserable love life is usually not my favourite topic, but when Kelly says "in order to get over a man, you have to get under another", I just crack up. And whatever misery might have been, suddenly seems much less important. Humour is a fantastic healer. Also the following proclamation "We screwed up, but hey, we are still here club" adds attractive upwards wrinkles and a guaranteed longer life.
It's great art to make people laugh. It is also great art to write about life. Life as it is for most people.

Cathy Kelly writes beautifully. OK, most of her main characters are likeable with the jerks/bitches looming in the background. But even the nicest heroines/heroes are no saints. Like all of us, they have made their mistakes, have been - and may still be - unhappy. Tragedies are hidden in their lives and there are lessons still to be learnt and problems to be sorted out.

Behind lace curtains and blue painted doors in idyllic Summer Street, life is real and varied and challenging. But in telling her story in that warm, funny way of hers, Cathy Kelly makes it entertaining and highly enjoyable. Summer Street and its residents come to life in front of me where I'm sitting at the café with a latte and seeing it all.

Since I read her first book, I have read them all, and never once have I been disappointed. Cathy Kelly is right there in the league with Maeve Binchy, Patricia Scanlan and Rosamunde Pilcher. Normally I don't like to compare but this is where Kelly has placed herself in her short career.

I am going to Greece later this summer and had promised myself to save this book for reading then! How silly to think I could have a brand new Cathy Kelly book lying around; beautiful, fat and with its inviting jacket just screaming at me.

The last secret revealed, on the jacket flap, was my greatest comfort: Kelly is presently busy working on her next novel!!
