4.0 out of 5 stars A great CD for the Clannad novices! 2 Nov 2000
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
This was the first Clannad CD I ever bought, because I was an Enya fan, and this is where she started out. Clannad is the band created by Enya's brothers and uncles in the late 60ies. They soon took Enya's older sister Maire as a lead singer, and their music evolved into a mix between pop, new age and traditional music. This CD is very useful to get to know the more "poppy" Clannad. You'll hear all their big classics, some of them are really wonderful. You'll have "Theme to Harry's Game", which is haunting and beautifully sad. You'll also find "In a Lifetime", a melancholic duet with Bono from U2 and the very sad but beautiful "Almost Seems Too Late to Turn". Of course there's also the part of traditional Irish tunes, with the particularly beautiful "Coinleach Glas an Fhomair". You'll find a great mix between very poppy and very celtic tunes, and it's a great introduction to the music of Clannad in the 80ies!

4.0 out of 5 stars Past Present 22 Dec 2010
Format:Audio CD
`Past Present' is a great introduction to the haunting music of Clannad. An Irish band comprising three siblings and their twin uncles, Clannad have been making music since the seventies and were especially big in the eighties when they performed the music to the TV series `Robin of Sherwood'. That theme features here as `Robin (the Hooded Man).

They have been described as new age, folk rock and Celtic and they have been all these things at different times. I adore the track `Coinleach Ghlas an Fhomair' which soothes me every time I hear it, I also love `Something to Believe In' with the keyboard and bass intro before the vocals kick in. The vocals can be a bit willowy for some tastes but suit the music perfectly. The artist Enya was in this band before leaving to go solo and is a good representation of the style of vocals on offer.

There is a later best of collection of this band but it always seems very expensive when I have searched for it online and `Past Present' still offers a great slice of this band for those new to their music. I like nothing more than putting this on a foggy day before settling down with a good book and recommend it to anyone with even a passing interest, it is still enjoyable even after repeated listening and all these years later.

Feel free to check out my blog which can be found on my profile page.
