Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

How does a new thriller writer carve out a name for himself in an overcrowded field? With Past Imperfect, Matthews shows that he is already a novelist of real accomplishment. Spanning three decades and moving between France, America and England with a slew of forensic, medical and psychiatric evidence to keep the reader irresistibly gripped, Matthews sets his narrative in motion with a car accident in California that has deadly consequences for two boys left fighting for their lives. French detective Dominic Fornier (a character owing not a little to Simenon) finds himself pulled out of the sluggish rural backwaters he is used to in order to unearth the clues that lie in a young boy's psyche. And the blackmail and political intrigue that Fornier encounters are no less intimidating than the ruthless killer determined to ensure that his identity is not disclosed. The exhilarating, picaresque sweep of Matthews' plot needs to be held together with a strong protagonist and with the laconic Fornier, Matthews has created just such a hero. If at times, one may feel the changing of gears between the legal and forensic aspects of the piece, this hardly matters. The delineation of each country is accomplished with dash and verve, and if (at 500 pages) this is a lengthy read, few will find their attention straying at any point. --Barry Forshaw

The Times

'Matthews maintains the suspense... an engrossing odyssey into the seamy side of a world that is so near, yet sometimes seems so far. Compulsive reading.'

I have to agree with all the good things that have already been said about this book. It is an excellent, unusual and very exciting read. Although the plot doesn't move at a fast pace, the story and characters draw you in so much that it's impossible to put down(much to my husband's annoyance)

Its too long! 11 May 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
The idea of this book is good but it really is too long, I thought I would never finish it. If cut down by about a third it would be far better, it could be made into a good film as its an interesting story.

Great descriptions of rural Provence in the 60s and an excitingly different story, not just because of the French settings. But what I liked best about this book were the offbeat, sly-humoured villians giving Duclos a hard time throughout. Almost Tarantino-like! Superb.

A bit of a slog
This book started really well but the style or writing, the length of the book and the drawn out story line meant that I slogged my way through this, it seemed to last forever! Read more

Great Start, Poor Finish
The book starts out really well and the premise is good. I was gripped for the first half, however, from then on the story looses focus and starts to meander, sometimes randomly... Read more

... Imperfect
I really did enjoy this book (honestly) and particularly its early sharpness, but as other reviewers point out it could have been considerably shorter and lose nothing. Read more

this is an annoyingly overwritten book. the plotting looks promising but the overall prose badly needs a blue pencil. Read more
