Doesn't the word 'ultra' in a product name just raise your expectations and make you wonder what's so 'ultra' instead of 'ordinary'? I already own the 'ordinary' version of this drive, the WD My Passport 2TB Drive, so I was especially curious. At first it seems the main difference is that the Ultra comes with a copy of SmartWare, a backup utility that can sync your computer's files keeping copies on the Ultra drive and also on your Dropbox account too. However (unless I missed something) you only get a month's free trial using the full feature set and if you want to continue using the Dropbox facility, for example, you'll have to pay a fee. That's a bit un-ultra. The drive also comes with a pair of WD utilities already on it, one for configuring and checking the drive and one for securing the content using encryption - however these are freely downloadable for use with any My Passport drive so they hardly qualify as ultra either. Physically both drives are the same size with a well-finished plastic case (it might look like metal but it isn't) and a solid feel but the Ultra version has its USB-3 port slightly to the right-side instead of the left and the port is 'upside-down' - as if the innards had been flipped over. However, there is another much more important difference, the speed of data transfer, and the Ultra just beats the standard Passport drive. For me it's testing about 10MB/s faster than the ordinary My Passport drive (when they're connected via USB3), which is about a 10% speed advantage. So maybe that's just enough to justify the Ultra moniker?Read more ›

I use this with a MacBook Pro laptop and it works great. You'll need to format it with Disk Utility first, after that you're good to go. The software included also includes a Mac version if you want to use it, although Time Machine is a suitably more efficient way of backing up your files if this is what you're buying it for.

I run my iTunes library off of this drive and it does a great job. I have full HD video from the iTunes store (about 5GB) and it can be played from the drive with no problems at all.

Transferring files is very quick - I noticed it was copying files at about 90-100 MB/s when copying from my main hard drive.

As other reviews have noted, this drive does get quite warm. I wouldn't say hot - certainly not enough to cause alarm.

I've owned many WD drives over the years and they are always reliable. I expect I'll have this one for a few years to come.

This is my first external HDD which I hope will last quite a while.... praying that it will never blow up or change into dark matter. It seemed alright for its price and the size is quite nice despite the cable being a bit short. I tested it out on a Wii U first (because Nintendo obviously can't be arsed to be modern and will probably need another cable) then I tried on a pc and at first I wanted to see if its okay with Usb 2.0 since its backwards compatible... well... It locks up Windows explorer if you try selecting a folder within the drive so its recommended to just use any USB 3.0 ports you have. (I don't know what you can do if you don't have any... sorry! senpai)

When setting it up its quite easy.. though for the inexperienced it'll probably be a bit confusing because you will have to search "Manage" on the start menu, click computer management then storage/ disk management. From there you then set up the volume and voilà the drive is set up.

Also when I used it earlier, the HDD would disconnect so if you get the same make sure you disable Usb selective suspend setting, which can be accessed from "Control Panel\Hardware and Sound\Power Options\Edit Plan Settings"

Finally I think this is a cool device, I had tried it on three computers, two running on Windows 7 and the other Windows 8. I'm going to give it four stars considering I had a few niggles there and there but for another user it'll likely be a different experience.

Bought as a replacement for a Samsung drive which had 2 small falls and hasn't been the same. Works well so far and no problems except when I copy content from a Humax Freeview box on to an Ext 3 partition on this drive I cannot see the content while using Linux reader, this didn't happen with the Samsung drive.

I have been looking for a psychically small yet large storage drive for a long time and after a lot of research I decided on purchasing the WD Passport Ultra 2 TB drive and so far so good. It is so silent you would forget about it.

I also bought the case from Case Logic for protection and even whilst in the case it's hard to believe I have 2TB capacity in such a small unit!

I know other users have complained about the shortness of the cable but don't let that put you off purchasing this brilliant storage drive.

If you are looking for a portable drive, loads of storage space at a reasonable price I would certainly recommend you give this drive a try.
