3.0 out of 5 stars A good, sturdy romance, 9 Aug 2002

(TOP 500 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
Lady Emma has been substitued at her own request for her sickly 7 year old sister and married by proxy to Lord Dain. Dain has been raised without love in his life, and has grown into a hardened and feared warrior. On the order of their King, the two marry to bury an old feud. But not all is buried, including historical and present mysteries and emotions....

Speer has written a solid medieval / mystical romance. There is a pleasant blend of history and magic in the book, and having it set in Cornwall, known for it's acceptance of things magical, is an excellent choice.

There is nothing of twists and turns in the plot, all is revealed including motives as the plot unfolds and there are plenty of clues along the way for the subplots, but that is not to say the reading is a chore. In fact that is often the way of genre reading, particularly romances, and this is a good example of the type. The story is well told, the characters engaging and the romance not unpleasing. A tale to enjoy on a rainy afternoon, if not one that will hold you fascinated from first page to last.
