4.0 out of 5 stars Wow, 11 Jul 2002
By A Customer
Firstly, the standard of acting is very high in this movie, low budget as it is. Viggo Mortensen quietly holds the screen as the mute Clay, and Brendan Fraser (whom I'd written off as a complete nothing) proved that he has acting skill WAY beyond what he is churning out at the moment. What the hell is that boy playing at?! He is amazing as Darkly Noon, a conflicted and grieving man who is driven to perpertrating the same horror on those who sheltered him from his own horror - namely religious intolerance.

The only thing I didn't understand was the significance of the giant silver shoe, and it gave the only jarring note in the film. I also found it irritating that Callie was so scantily clad all the time, and nobody figured out that this might cause a problem with their strange guest! Otherwise this is an excellent film noir, with a lovely score by Philip Ridley (which unfortunately you can't buy).

5.0 out of 5 stars When two different worlds collide......, 17 May 2003
By Helen Yates "ecco1983" (Manchester, England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Clay (Viggo Mortensen) and Callie (Ashley Judd) are living alone as unmarried lovers in the middle of the forest. Clay's mother (Grace Zabriskie) lives nearby but is convinced that Callie is a witch who killed Clay's father and now has Clay in her clutches. Darkly Noon (Brendan Fraser) is a young man who has been brought in a religious obsessed cult where everything is considered a sin. When Darkly's cult is killed, he runs away and finds himself in the hands of Clay and Callie. When Clay's mother, Roxy gets involved and accuses Callie, this along with Darkly's sexual obsession with Callie, the films comes to a fantastic climax......

A very underrated film. Viggo is a mute who is able to make his actions speak louder than his words. And Brendan Fraser..... I never thought he could only be up for comic roles like California Man and George of the Jungle.... so mistaken!!! This type of serious acting is more Brendan's style and he is definelty the star of the film

4.0 out of 5 stars Not much plot but great to look at., 19 Jun 2000

(TOP 500 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
This film has a very simple plot that says nothing new but it serves as a platform for a beautiful piece of film making art.

A young man, Darkly Noon (Fraser) who has had a very strict religious upbringing, runs in terror through the forest where he is found, rescued and taken to an isolated cabin in the depths of the forest. There, he meets Callie (Judd) who befriends and takes care of him.

Darkly has never before seen a woman like Callie and he finds that she arouses feelings in him that he thinks are very wrong. Later, when Callie's lover Clay returns, Darkly spies on them. Believing that what they are doing, is as wrong as what he finds himself doing, he is torn between his strict upbringing and a his new feelings.

Callie and Clay are the only two people in a position to help him but they remain oddly unaware of the explosion that is building inside Darkly. Eventually, he can take no more and exactly what you expect to happen does.

It's not a new storyline but the film is carried by Ashley Judd's acting and some wonderful cinematography. The forest becomes a weird, threatening and surreal place where Callie reigns like some irresistably lovely fairy queen. Judd gives the character a credible mix of open friendship and compassion while being fully and unquesioningly committed to her mute partner Clay.
