This must be the most romantic musical that Stephen Sondheim has composed, even if the theme is still dark and unusual. But the musical score is romantic, poignant and compelling. This London cast version is a more complete musical score and has the West End's leading stars of the musical theatre in its cast. Michael Ball's voice soars in songs such as in the incredible I Love Fosca continuation of No One Has Ever Loved Me and Is This What You Call Love and in the beautiful duets with Helen Hobson,Happiness and Just Another Love Story. Maria Friedman's award-winning performance is partly due to her rendering of songs like Loving You and some of the duets with Giorgio. The songs are so much richer because you can almost visualize the dramatic acting that the storyline required. If you're a fan of either Sondheim, Ball or Friedman, this is the album that brings these talents together.
