Product Description

From the Publisher

"Read this! ." That's what you tell him the next time he snatches up his Guardian Sports section and retreats to his private haven, the smallest room in the house. Then you sit back and watch the makeover unfold. In an effort to lend him a greater air of sophistication, you've discreetly placed a copy of this amazing book 'Passing Time in the Loo, Volume 1' next to the commode. And before hubby can think to ask where it came from, he'll already have dipped into several two-page summaries of classic works that make up the bulk of the bulky book, skimmed a brief biography of one of its featured history-makers, glanced through a page or two of its `Trivia To Learn By' library and soaked up a few of its witty and wise quotes and anecdotes. In short, he'll be both enthroned and enthralled.
And when he finally emerges from his porcelain library, his mind crammed with facts and ideas - fully flushed with literacy, if you will - he'll immediately want to impress you with his newfound knowledge of books, of people, of business, of the world. . . . Yes, believe it or not, he may actually sit down and talk to you!

Once again `Passing Time in the Loo, volume 1' has come to the rescue. Think all literary tomes have to be stuffy and longwinded? Despite the preachings of your snobbish, ivory-tower intellect brother-in-law, you aren't required before you die to perform a cover-to-cover study of every drawn-out text the world has produced. In this day and age, who has the time and patience - or ideal setting, for that matter - to do so?

With its array of non-stuffy, non-longwinded literary distillations, your man can dip in and out of this book at a whim, picking up easily-absorbed book-learning and snippets of knowledge without feeling as if he's drowning in information. And, over time, as the transformation takes full effect, LOO may even find its way into your bedroom (not a bad thing at all!) or be smuggled into his workplace to crack open during breaks. Within mere months, these condensed, crash-course, water-cooler renderings could even earn him the title of designated office genius.

Sitters and thinkers will be impressed by the edition's smart-looking softcover wrapped around a whopping 608 literacy-filled pages; combined, the book exudes a timeless, classic elegance. "Read this, honey . . ." For the person who has it all but doesn't (yet) know it all, it's a classical education at a fraction of the cost and time. 'Passing Time in the Loo, volume 1' is transforming the world - one husband at a time. --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

While this book might at first seem to be aimed at constipated men - or at least those who always take something to read in the loo with them - it's really ideal for both sexes and should be on every coffee table in the land [not to mention dentists' waiting rooms]. Packed with bite-size chunks of information, anecdotes, reviews of classic novels, biographies of famous people ... it's great. If you really want to take the title literally, my advice is to eat nothing but bananas for a month and work your way through this book in the little boy's [or girl's] room during your marathon sessions there. If you still have any friends left with your strange toilet habits, you'll impress their socks off with what you know about, well ... everything!

This book contains a summary of just about every topic that ever comes up in any conversation. Vast trivia, biographies of famous people, summaries of classic novels, ways to improve vocabulary, management guide, personal effectiveness, general knowledge, and that's not even vaguely close to all. My most valued book without a doubt. It's very well-researched, well presented and absolutely ideal for a gift. Don't be put off my the title - this book is basically an insightful summary of everything. I'm off to buy another copy just in case...

This is exactly what the title states. One great doorstop of a paperback for those 1 to 20 minutes bouts of solitude wherever you are. Makes a great gift for the culture minded. Perhaps a bit too American in places but quite acceptable. Can't wait for volume 2.

Good for Attention-Deficit sufferers
For those who haven't got time to read, this is a clever idea - a summary of what you're missing. Snippets and extracts from the fields of management-speak and self-help; potted... Read more

typeface is far too small to read in the loo!
Unless you remember to take your glasses to the toilet, forget it. This is set with a smaller font even than volume 1. Read more

Classics summarised in 2 pages
I adore this book; I have very little general knowledge when it comes to the literary classics & Shakespeare; the 2 page summaries made it easier for me to change this!

An excellent purchase
I came across this book when visiting a friend, and couldn't put it down. It is far better than the rather flippant title suggests. Read more

Great fun for the Loo!! :)
Exactly what it says on the tin! Slight American centric and would be great in a British version too, but still an interesting read to pass the time!

Great idea, wretched book
