3.0 out of 5 stars Passing Shadows 31 May 2007
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I have always enjoyed Della Galton's short stories in the women's weeklies and I was therefore eager to read her first novel. However, I was a little disappointed. The writing felt unfamiliar in places, not her usual gentle style, and there were a few irritating clichés ("there were only so many cold showers a man could take"). I also thought that the "will they, won't they?" dilemma surrounding the relationship between Maggie and Finn dragged on far too long. In fact, I lost patience with them. Still, some of the characters were well drawn and I enjoyed the ending. I certainly wouldn't describe the book as a page turner though.

5.0 out of 5 stars I Read This Book In One Sitting 25 April 2006
By Jan
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I have been reading Della Galton's short stories and serials for quite a few years now, so was delighted when I heard she had written her first book. I decided to read the first few paragraphs the morning the book arrived from Amazon, and simply couldn't put it down. Set in an animal sanctuary, you soon get caught up not only with the complicated lives of the characters, but also with the fate of the abandoned, and sometimes over-sexed, animals! Both amusing and poignant, this is a story of friendship, love and loyalty, and shows how the past can never really be forgotten.

An excellent first novel by Della, and I am very much looking forward to reading her next one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Passing Shadows 2 May 2006
Format:Paperback
Della Galton's short stories limit us to a mere ten minutes of love, romance and humour at a time. Her serials keep us waiting for our next emotional fix. But now, her first novel allows us 317 pages of sheer pleasure all in one go! Della's animal-lover heroine, Maggie, deserves to get a guy like Finn. But there are complications. Loyalty to her friend, Sarah. Young Ben's paternity. Gary's attentions. The story rattles along at a splendid pace, building up to a thoroughly satisfying lump-in-the throat, Della Galton, happy ending.
