Amazon.co.uk Review

It's Die Hard on a plane in this action thriller, starring Wesley Snipes as an anti-terrorist specialist whose early retirement is interrupted when his flight is overtaken by a bloodthirsty villain (Bruce Payne). Watching this at home is pretty much an excuse to order pizza and kick back, as the familiar rhythms of maverick-cop-versus-international-criminal take over and nothing new or fresh in the formula emerges. The supporting cast includes Elizabeth Hurley (Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery) as a gun-wielding, junior terrorist, which is fun simply for being unexpected. The release includes optional full-screen and widescreen presentations, Dolby sound, production notes and optional English, French and Spanish subtitles. --Tom Keogh

2.0 out of 5 stars Wesley Snipes Vs The Rane Of Terror, or Pain Of Terror........., 23 May 2011

Of all the Die Hard clones there has been, and there have been many, Passenger 57 may just be the worst. The story follows Wesley Snipes' airline security expert John Cutter, who whilst undertaking a flight to L.A. gets embroiled in a hostage takeover led by evil bad man with a troubled childhood, Charles Rane. Cue quips, kicks and death defying tricks as Cutter strikes one for the good guys. Kevin Hooks' film works well enough on a very basic actioner level, due in the main to Snipes. Snipes was six years away from his signature role in Blade, and for sure he is a bona fide action star. As evidenced here, where he has the charisma and body motions to carry the film thru its turgid script. A script that smacks of the writers sitting round a table and suggesting they put Snipes in a number of tricky situations as an excuse for him to beat the crappola out of everyone. Oh lets not forget the forced love story waiting to happen as well .

It's just a lazy film that is the cash in that many realised it was on its release. Bruce Payne manfully tries to make the unbalanced Charles Rane truly evil, but doesn't succeed. Liz Hurley, goddess of womanhood that she is, looks uncomfortable holding a gun, while leading lady Alex Datcher is hopelessly out of her depth. Youthful looking Tom Sizemore and Bruce Greenwood also appear, but both are throwaway characters that you end up wishing we had had more of. Stanley Clarke's score is abysmal, it's the sort of score one expects to hear in a soft core porno movie. You know the kind where the protagonists are making love but they still have their underwear on! Yes that kind. Poor plotting, poor scripting and just about poor in technical execution. I don't ask much of the action genre, I really don't, but at least give the film some soul from which to entertain the popcorn masses. 3/10 for Snipes' fighting and Liz Hurley's legs.

2.0 out of 5 stars A 1 star elevated to 2 star because it's THAT bad, 25 Feb 2010

The plane has been hijacked. It lands on a small airfield. Bodies are being dropped from the front door of the plane onto the tarmac. People are being executed.
The local police chief turns from the horrifying scene and in a low growl, reminiscent of a scene from the Dukes of Hazzard, drawls into the camera - `Martha, make me one of your special coffees'.
Watching this film is like religion. You have to suspend your disbelief. All through it you are left wondering why. Why, for example, when the plane lands and is threatened with imminent destruction, do the authorities not immediately evacuate the local fair ground which, surprisingly, is less than 100m metres from the plane. The children play on, oblivious to the unfolding danger. They only become aware of the danger when the police are running through the fairground and the baddies are shooting everybody.
This is a bona fide, 100%, turkey on every level. Only watch it to marvel at the badness of it, and on that level it's absolutely hilarious.

3.0 out of 5 stars So bad that its good? Maybe., 18 July 2011
This review is from: Passenger 57 [1993] [DVD] [1992] (DVD)
Passeger 57 was made in the wake of the successful Die Hard. This film is made with Die Hard 1 and 2 in mind. It also resembles other films which came later including Executive Decision, Con Air and Air Force One. All of these films have their good points and bad. Passenger 57 certainly does.
Passenger 57 good points- 1. Well staged action. 2.Wesley Snipes on good form. 3. A good Stanley Clarke music score 4. An early Liz Hurley role(playing a bad girl Xenia Onatop type).
Passenger 57 bad points 1. Between the action some awful cliche scenes. 2. Lots of cliches. 3. Tom sizemores in it. 4. Tom sizemores pointless part. 4. Boring cliche love interest.
Passenger 57 has dated bad. Its a film I remember enjoying a decade or so ago but now after watching it again I can't help but feel it's a bad unoriginal movie with no artistic merit. But then maybe with the exciting action scenes, charicature baddies and Wesley Snipes kicking butt, the film isn't so bad. Maybe.
