Book Description

18 Feb 1997 Battleground Europe
The British offensive, which became known as Passchendaele, got underway on 31 July, 1917 with the objective of capturing fifteen miles of territory. The attack quickly lost momentum and, it was not until finally in November that the line managed to advance seven miles. With winter setting in, the British troops were subjected to some of the worst conditions they had ever faced. During the attack 265,000 were either killed or injured. This battlefield guide gives details of the attacks whilst guiding the reader through the battlefield as it stands today. With illustrated maps and then and now photographs it will appeal to those visiting the area as well as armchair historians.

5.0 out of 5 stars A SMALL FACET OF THE THIRD BATTLE OF YPRES 12 Oct 2012
By P. A. Panozzo - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
Passchendaele ridge and the Flemish village that bears it's name was the objective of the third battle of Ypres. This volume from the Battleground Europe series necessarily limits it's focus to a small segment of the combatants and their role in this incredible battle. The New Zealanders and the Canadian Corps and the attacks they launched are exclusively dealt with. Other volumes in the series deal with the British (Imperial) and Australian troops and their attacks. I have always been fascinated by World War One battles and I will never be able to physically visit these momentous battlefields. These guidebooks are the next best thing to being there! The history is truly fascinating and the author, Nigel Cave, who is also the series editor, has prepared a valuable reference tool so that the battlefield tourist can better appreciate this facet of history and armchair historians like me can vicariously enjoy it as well! Like other volumes in the series, black and white photos, excellent maps, and driving tours are presented. I also highly recommend Messines Ridge: Ypres (Battleground Europe) by Peter Oldham and St. Julien: Ypres (Battleground Europe) by Graham Keech. Also MAJOR AND MRS HOLT'S POCKET BATTLEFIELD GUIDE TO YPRES AND PASSCHENDAELE: 1st Ypres; 2nd Ypres (Gas Attack); 3rd Ypres (Passchendaele)(Holts Pocket Battlefield Guide)
