Product Description

Imagine the uncertainty ceased and the world was faced with an indisputable, stark truth:- reduce atmospheric CO2 to pre-biblical levels within three years or the human race will be destroyed. What would we do, what could we do? Who would lead us?

Passage to Redemption is an epic, multi-threaded thriller that spans the centuries from early Mayan times to the year 2012. Starting on board a British warship in the early 1800s, the story includes the quest of a young man to find his only living relative, a hitherto unknown voyage to South America by the father of Charles Darwin that has hugely important consequences, and politics of power amongst the world's largest religions as mankind faces the brink of extinction.

About the Author

The Crew is an international writing group started by the novelist Peter Lihou with the objective of proving that a disparate group of authors could work together and complete a successful novel in twelve months. Over the months the authors have faced a multitude of challenges aside from those created by the project, ranging from extreme climatic emergencies (including a volcanic eruption) to life threatening illnesses and several bereavements, financial hardship, lifestyle and career pressures. Inevitably some have been unable to accommodate the project and consequently there have been reductions in the membership of The Crew. The creative process, however, has continued to be nurtured by the remaining authors. During the life of the project a total of 53 individuals contributed to either the planning or writing phases. Seventeen embarked on the yearlong writing phase that has taken the equivalent of 12 man (and woman) years to complete as well as more than 8,000 messages on the closed Internet forum. These required over 133,000 page views by the authors or an average of 12,000 each, over the course of the year. To date, none of the authors have met in person and the only contact has been via the Internet.

Format:Paperback
A riveting and fascinating novel, from its opening salvos to it unexpected finale it keeps the reader involved and stimulated. From what appears to be an historic novel set in the 19th century, it quickly jumps to a contemporary quest covering the globe as protagonists chase after artefacts from Charles Darwin's father, lured by a promise of a missing masterpiece. Woven into this fabric is a search to solve the impending global environmental crisis, highlighting the failings of humankind in general and the ruling classes in particular. The need for the world at large to come to terms with the impending disaster is cast in a poignant counterpoint to an unlikely romance that blossoms against all odds.

Passage to Redemption has a range of elements to satisfy and challenge all readers, nothing can be taken for granted as the foibles, lies and mismanagement of mankind are laid out bare for all to see. The novel's wish is that all of those in a position to influence human use and abuse of our fragile environment read this Passage to Redemptionnovel and understand that action needs to be taken swiftly and decisively to claim our Passage to Redemption.

To add an extra level of interest and a breadth and depth not normally found in traditional single author novels, Passage to Redemption was written by a Crew of 20 authors, from vastly removed countries, social and cultural backgrounds. It is fresh and exciting and its topic is rendered dramatically and forcefully in a work that makes compelling reading.

Brilliant! 22 Jan 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
This highly unusual novel was written by a group of authors from all over the world who never met each other. The project set out to prove that a meaningful work of literature could be created by people from entirely different cultures, beliefs, political and economic backgrounds.

It succeeded magnificently.

Not only is this a gripping multi-faceted story that will keep you absorbed through the 500 plus pages, but it carries an important message about how the world could act to protect the environment if people were galvanised by a 'drop dead' date.

If all fossil fuels were banned and the wells capped, what would civilization do? There are some dramatic conclusions and quite novel suggestions; the consequences are not all good and you'll need to read it to find out the result (I don't wish to spoil it).

The prose sometimes reveals that fact that more than one hand has written it, but only barely and it doesn't detract from the storyline as there are, in any case, multiple strands running through it. Most of the chapters are very well written, some are brilliant, one is mediocre.

All in all this is a great read.

Uncanny Thriller 29 Nov 2010
By Michael Parker - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
When you get the feeling that the thriller you're reading has an unmistakeable ring of truth to it, you know there is an unmistakeable ring of truth to it. And Passage To Redemption leaves you wondering just how close to the truth have the writers got when dealing with the frightening prospect of a Mayan prophecy that does not bode well for the future of our planet. This is not a science fiction novel, but a story that lays across the centuries and draws the reader into an inescapable feeling that something is going to happen; not in the book, but in 2012. If you look at the portents around you now, the upheavals this planet is experiencing, you should read this book. The story opens in 1820 after a gun battle at sea, but then leaps forward to modern times. But by introducing the so called 'secret' voyage of Robert Darwin father of the legendary Charles Darwin, the reader is taken back briefly to a period when Mayan culture prophesied about the future. The story spans the centuries seamlessly and brings elements of greed, love, youthful endeavour and courage, murder, mystery and the secrets of the ancients. Gloriously woven together, Passage To Redemption takes the reader on a thought provoking ride through tempestuous times. This book is set to become the eco thrilling blockbuster of the age, and will be a delight to whoever chooses to pick it up.

A fascinating novel 21 Jan 2011
By Kate Cavendish - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition
This is a book that will stay with you for a long time after you put it down. The multi-threaded story switches between eras of early 19th century, Mayan times, modern day and even into the future.

It combines the traditional Science versus Religion conflict arguments (without seeking to resolve them) that arose when Darwin published On the origin of species by means of natural selection,: Or, The preservation of favoured races in the struggle for life in the mid 1800s, with a modern day storyline about a young man seeking his only living relative, and a chilling proposition that forces mankind to act now to remedy climate change. This latter proposition is quite riveting; what would happen if, instead of the debate over if and when, a global consensus existed with no doubt whatsoever and a hard deadline of just a few years time was universally agreed in which drastic action needed to be taken with dire consequences for failure. The point about being so drastic is that it brings home what could be achieved if we really tried and from that point a better strategy might be defined here and now. Some of the ideas to counter climate change seem a bit whacky, until you think them through and realise they might actually work!

The book itself is written by multiple authors from all over the world and, to be frank, there are times when this can be observed in the text. A change of style emerges between certain chapters and some are more riveting than others. However, this is a long book and I've read many by a single author that have lacked a consistent style, so knowing the roots of this work, it's a stunning achievement to have written it so well. The fact it has multiple threads actually lends itself to the stylistic differences and the heart beat of the story doesn't falter.

If I was to judge on the merits of the literary construction, I might give this 4 rather than 5 stars but the plot(s) is definitely 5 stars and on the basis of the worldwide project behind it, I only wish I could give 6.
