Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Redman sees Passage Of Time as a narrative continuum, or suite. There's a sense that the Californian tenorman is reflecting on his productive decade-long stretch with Warners, attempting to make a weighty statement on the story so far. Redman wrote and produced all of the music, assisted by his regular team of Aaron Goldberg (piano), Reuben Rogers (bass) and Gregory Hutchinson (drums). The whole sequence opens with "Before", Redman's lone tenor flutter almost sounding like a John Surman solo, all breathily deep vibrations and scampering progressions. Each number seamlessly merges into the next, with "Phase II" picking up a funky limp, switching from one time-frame to another, then "Our Minuet" enjoying a mid-point blues-dappled tenor solo and ending with a solo bass rumination. It's all about the steady stream, not surprise interjections or upturned textures, and this approach can have its drawbacks by the time we reach tracks 5 and 6. Luckily, the next cut, "Enemies Within", arrives in engagingly tentative spurts, leaving halting spaces before embarking on a typically quicksilver Redman work-out. Martin Longley

REDMAN at his best! 30 Nov 2001
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
How? How can anyone even put forward the suggestion that this is not a great album? I'd read negative reviews on the album and was initially hesitant to buy it, but after seeing REDMAN play the whole album LIVE at the RFH, I was convinced beyond reasonable doubt that this is one of the best JAZZ albums of the last decade. Redman's playing is smooth and relaxing where it has to be, and fierce and HARD-HITTING where necessary. It's an album to suit all moods. Whether you're down and moody or need something inspiring, it's right here on this album. Right now, the album just sits in my CD player and it's constantly playing...DAY and NIGHT.
THIS IS REDMAN AT HIS BEST.

Different, but I like it 27 April 2001
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
I should start by saying I own all Joshua Redman's CDs plus a few with him as a sideman (including a couple with Dewey Redman.) So I bought this one from Amazon without hearing it or knowing anything about it. Even if it was not up to his usual high standards, I would have wanted to own it - yes, I'm a fan. I do miss some of the instantly accessible and hummable tunes, like "Faith" from Mood Swing, the opening "Jig-A-Jug" from Spirit Of The Moment, "One Shining Soul" from Freedom In The Groove, "How Come U Don't Call Any More" from Timeless Tales. Passage Of Time is more challenging to listen to, but rewarding. I don't think comparisons with A Love Supreme are valid - if nothing else it is a different time and context which sets Coltrane's master work apart.

The great sax player 22 April 2001
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
To quote the late Miles Davis "The music speaks for itself" I hope this quartet stays together for a long time because the they are reaching a level that only a few of the great jazz bands in history reached. This is not a bunch of musicians thrown into the studio to play together, this is the what great group interplay is all about."Passage of Time" is the perfect title for this CD, because after a muched hyped introduction into the Jazz world, Joshua Redman has come into his own.....GREAT CD!
