The majority of this 2CD + 1DVD set covers the period 1975-1983 with one further song from 1984 and another from the digital reggae era (1986 ; "Mr. Chin Slippers" which is surprisingly pretty good even to me an avowed sceptic of the merits ragga). There is plenty missing since the Mighty Diamonds recorded for a host of producers during this period and it'd be impossible to license tracks from all of them. However the essentials are here including the all important Channel One tracks including some tasty rarities (on CD at least) including their brilliant cover of the Wailers immortal "Jailhouse" (AKA "Good Good Rudie"), the driving "Jah Will Work It Out" over the Drifter rhythm, and the superbly harmonised "Back Weh (You No Mafia)". The compilers have also put on the obvious "Right Time", "I Need A Roof", "Have Mercy" and "Shame & Pride" which although very familiar are definitely key tracks in the Mighty Diamonds Channel One oeuvre. There are also a few Channel One dubplate vinyl-rips in understandably fairly rough sound quality which is only off-putting in one instance ("Swell Headed" which is almost comically scratchy for its 1st 3-minutes but the 2nd half is much clearer being a somewhat eerie dub).

Away from Channel One there are a bunch of Joe Gibbs tracks including the classic "Ghetto Living" and a couple of Gibbs dubplates (eg. a very solid "Hypocrite") in better sound than the Channel One dubplates. "Pass The Kouchie" is here of course plus a 2nd do-over "Pass The Knowledge" which is less essential. The remainder is a mix of superior roots (eg. "Eyes On Africa", "Gates Of Zion") and lovers ("Gypsy Woman", "Lovely Lady") and a frankly bizarre cover of "Aquarius" by the Fifth Dimension ("Let Jah Sun Shine").

can find little to argue about, as regards the review by tch (no relation), except that i really enjoyed the 'muppets' horn motif on 'struggling'. but, really, as someone who has always enjoyed the mighty diamonds, and owned little, have now found the ideal purchase, all the best in a 'oner'. this is a seriously good collection, of which, a fair amount is new to me, but is comprehensive in it's demonstration of the trio's vocal abilities. was delighted that my personal favourite 'morgan the pirate' is included, but would have been ecstatic had the extended mix been utilised. part of an impressive, continuing series of anthologies on vp records, this should be appearing as a staple in most reggae collections.
