Biography

Founded in 1998 by Mark Hunter and Jason Hager (who was replaced by Matt DeVries in 2001), CHIMAIRA were soon signed by Roadrunner Records after releasing their first EP "This Present Darkness" on their own. In 2001 their debut album "Pass Out Of Existence" was released. On this record CHIMARIA still had some slight Nu Metal influences in their sound, but they completely ... Chimaira - Pass Out of Existence

Amazon.co.uk

After the first listen of Pass Out of Existence, Chimaira bear all the hallmarks of being little more than a copycat band following along in the scorched-earth wake of their label mates, the mighty Slipknot. Certainly, this six-man Ohio metal crew boast a fair few of the 'Knot's most notable musical characteristics: Pass Out Of Existence, their debut, is built around a bludgeoning, undeniably old-skool thrash metal dynamic, accompanied by jackhammer drumming, spleen-venting primal-scream lyrics and brutally-applied electronic loops. Still, there's much evidence that Chimaira have arrived at this point as much through innovation as imitation: "Dead Inside" marries its powerhouse chorus to passages of spacious, Tool-like anthemicism and bursts of industrial glitchery, while the sinister, dark guitar-stroking ambience of "Abeo" proves that for all Chimaira's passion for extreme metal, they're far more than one trick ponies. It is true, of course, that Slipknot fans will find much to enjoy here, the super-tight, percussion-heavy "Painting The White To Grey" and the epic, tortured twelve-minute closer "Jade" proving obvious album highlights. --Louis Pattison

6.Abeo
weird but very cool instrumental written by mark on the verge of having a nervous breakdown 3/5
7.SP LIT
This is my all time faveourite metal song it has a great guitar riff and marks singing and shouting is awesome, Its about a friend of marks (the singer) who was going out with some girl and they were going out then 1 day she screwed him over in the worst way, So mark wrote a song of the hatred he felt with a great chorus saying "i never wanted this" i urge you to check out this song its unreal. 5/5
8. Painting the white to grey
good song little bit boring but still good 4/5
9. taste my...

chimairas self titled opus was hit and miss and that upset me,this is a storming album and although they had an album of sorts out before this, which wasnt easy to get, this is regarded as their proper debut and its a classic, filled with rage, killer riffs, crunching drum beats and snarls and melodic singing a plenty,it is a class example of a band with enough hunger to bankrupt mcdonalds, they just let it all out here and we are lucky to know it.

this is not nu metal,to state this is to tell a lie,it isnt metalcore as such although a few tasty breakdowns are thrown in,it is metal much in the vein of machine heads burn my eyes album, its a collection of memorable songs with soaring riffs and equally charged chorus' that are as catchy as they are fierce, thats some skill i can tell you.

Anyway, songs like opener let go and dead inside show the speed of chimaira and the melodic fury they can release, severed and split are still live favourites to this day and are still sublime slabs of metal and rizzo and jade are gems that dont get the credit they deserve, all in all this is a class album and they raised the bar again on the follow up to this,if its matal with a smile and a punch that you crave then get this

From the moment the album 'pass out of existense' starts to play you can almost feel your head about to explode! They've got everything from jackhammer riffage to soothing melodies. 'Dead inside' with its brutal double base drumming sticks in your head like a sharp axe. 'Severed' is a sonic assault on the senses, you can almost feel the bands emotions running wild. They have the obvious comparison to Fear Factory, but if your a true metalhead then you'll see through the smoke and realise that these guys have real talent. Album closer 'jade' is 12 minutes of excrutiating pain, and by the time it ends you really do need to lie down!! ladies and gentlemen we have a winner here...

This album is really groundbreaking stuff! A couple of instantly loveable metal tunes (namely "sp lit" and "pass out of existence") mixed in with some melodic boring emo riffs. This album is a must for a truely ecclectic rock collection (slide it inbetween Spineshank and Machine Head) with ups, downs and just general misbehaviour of the audibly awesome variety.

This is an extreme mix of slipknot style thrash metal mixed in with thumping fear factory style riffs. Chimaira spread their message of hate, aggression and depression in the form of multilayered, super speed death-metal meets techno type music. With the amazing song "dead inside" which begins by setting the mood with an overdosed demonic begining before spinning into a rage of a song with constant rolling drums. "Painting the white to grey" begins of like a speeding train on-coarse towards a firey doom before leaping into a soul shreading chorus with dry bass and hints of the keyboard splashed into the cracks. If you enjoy some slipknot, spineshank static-X or fear factory then your sure to love this, its a hit for all lovers of realy heavy music.

I got this album as a Christmas present which I'd asked for having 'Dead Inside' on two other albums. I didn't get to put it on till Boxing Day but let me tell you it was worth the wait. It was has the speed and the heaviness of Slipknot or System of a Down but also uses a lot of sound samples like Fear Factory. A must have for any metal fans. Definately one of the best metal albums of 2001. A great album from some nu-comers. All hail the nu-breed.
