Product Description

Book Description

How to Pass the QTS Numeracy and Literacy Skills is the only book to contain both numeracy and literacy practice tests and revision. It includes essential grammar, punctuation, comprehension and spelling practice, as well as reviews of mental arithmetic with shortcut techniques, for the Qualified Teacher Status skills test

Product Description

All trainee teachers in England and Wales have to sit numeracy, literacy and ICT skills tests in order to achieve Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) which permits them to continue or start teaching.

How to Pass the QTS Numeracy and Literary Skills Test is the only book available that includes both literacy and numeracy revision and mock tests. The numeracy section starts at a low level and includes a diagnostic test, a maths review, mental and general arithmetic practice, and revision of statistics. It gives the reader a good grounding in the skills needed to pass the test, particularly if maths has always been a weak subject. The literacy section includes practice material on spelling, punctuation, grammar and comprehension. It highlights the areas where people commonly have problems, and provides easy to follow explanations and practice questions and answers.

A let down. 27 Aug 2011

How to Pass the QTS Numeracy and Literacy Skills Tests: Essential Practice for the Qualified Teacher Status Skills Tests (Testing Series)

I agree completely with the previous review quoted below:
"After researching various QTS revision books I decided to try this one as it contained both literacy and numeracy. I was extremely disappointed with the content in the book particularly with numeracy. Although it informs us of the topics to expect in the QTS tests, it doesn't go into enough detail at all. The exemplar tests are pointless as the answers don't explain the method used, which is vital!!! I could have found this information online rather than have spent money on a useless book. Don't waste your money or time!!!"

The author has commented on that review that there are expanded answers at the back of the book, but I was thrown by the numeracy examples. They are like trying to make sense of un-punctuated sentences. The examples were not annotated and explained, sometimes using techniques which had not been introduced in the text.

I bought the book because although I always feel that I love numbers and patterns in maths, I wanted a simple refresher of terms and techniques currently used for the QTS skills test and in classroom practice. The way the examples are set out left me more nervous than before.

Delivered quickly and in perfect condition.
The book itself is clearly set out and offers explanations in solving mental and general arithmetic. After each section there are example questions and mock tests of which the answers with explanations are in the back of the book. A very useful book.

The book is brilliant however I must admit that some of the spelling tests are confusing.
I have done a few of them now and I wondered whether some of the words have been spelt the American way and not the English.
