Book Description

3 Mar 2011 0749462418 978-0749462413

All trainee teachers in England and Wales have to sit numeracy and literacy skills tests in order to achieve Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) which permits them to continue or start teaching.

How to Pass the QTS Numeracy and Literary Skills Test is the only book available that includes both literacy and numeracy revision and mock tests. The numeracy section starts at a low level and includes a diagnostic test, a maths review, mental and general arithmetic practice, and revision of statistics. It gives the reader a good grounding in the skills needed to pass the test, particularly if maths has always been a weak subject. The literacy section includes practice material on spelling, punctuation, grammar and comprehension. It highlights the areas where people commonly have problems, and provides easy to follow explanations and practice questions and answers.

This book comes with FREE audio files for mental arithmetic tests. To download them please visit: http://www.koganpage.com/qts

How to Pass the QTS Numeracy and Literacy Skills Tests: Essential Practice for the Qualified Teacher Status Skills Tests (Testing Series)

What a fantastic book! This has been my little companion whilst preparing for my qualified teacher status (QTS) skills tests...after reading through this book to check my understanding and completing a selection of the practice tests, I passed all three of the skills tests on my first attempt! A must buy for any trainee teacher!

5.0 out of 5 stars I passed both first time! 23 Oct 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I used this book in addition to the online tests. I'll admit I didn't actually use much other than the practice tests but after I spent weeks doing the online ones I had a sneaking suspicion that I was only passing them because I'd done them so many times, and these made me think again. The practices in here are much much tougher than the actual test and if you can pass these (or near enough) you'll breeze the real thing.

2.0 out of 5 stars oh dear 5 Nov 2012

I purchased this book as it contained both literacy and numeracy and wanted to save the pennies. I passed the literacy test today but can't credit this book for the achievement. The spelling section was OK but mostly this book has only managed to confuse and got worse as I ploughed through. By the time I reached the comprehension section it only offered three passages of texts with a selection of questions you may have. There wasn't one piece of advice given - even the most basic such as to read the questions before the text so you know what is expected of you before reading. And yes there is typo errors as mentioned by another reviewer! My pass today was down to the online practice tests and the commentary that accompanied them. Also the glossary of literacy terms on the TA website is very useful.
I will not be using this book to help me pass the numeracy next week!

3.0 out of 5 stars Basic but useful 31 Aug 2012

Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I found this book was more useful in calming my nerves pre-test, rather than actually teaching me very much. I have always been an 'over-preparer' and this book gave me the opportunity to do exactly that. I felt that the information on what to expect when sitting the test was excellent, and the most useful part of the book for me. I think that as a book, helping trainees to pass a computer based test, the format is limited in how helpful it can be, and a version on CDrom, with practice tests to go through would have been infinitely more useful. However, the explanations were very helpful, and I did pass both tests, so obviously, the book did something right. Buy the book if you need extra help with the materials, but I think practicing the tests online would probably be more useful than the practices in the book.

2.0 out of 5 stars A let down. 27 Aug 2011

How to Pass the QTS Numeracy and Literacy Skills Tests: Essential Practice for the Qualified Teacher Status Skills Tests (Testing Series)

I agree completely with the previous review quoted below:
"After researching various QTS revision books I decided to try this one as it contained both literacy and numeracy. I was extremely disappointed with the content in the book particularly with numeracy. Although it informs us of the topics to expect in the QTS tests, it doesn't go into enough detail at all. The exemplar tests are pointless as the answers don't explain the method used, which is vital!!! I could have found this information online rather than have spent money on a useless book. Don't waste your money or time!!!"

The author has commented on that review that there are expanded answers at the back of the book, but I was thrown by the numeracy examples. They are like trying to make sense of un-punctuated sentences. The examples were not annotated and explained, sometimes using techniques which had not been introduced in the text.

I bought the book because although I always feel that I love numbers and patterns in maths, I wanted a simple refresher of terms and techniques currently used for the QTS skills test and in classroom practice. The way the examples are set out left me more nervous than before.

I think this book has definitely helped me. When you don't use a skill for many years, you lose confidence in your ability. This book brings you back up to speed without it being long and boring.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not great
good book for the literacy section the maths section however is flawed, the question and answer sections don't seem to match up.

1.0 out of 5 stars No Help At All
Sadly this was little help at all, large parts are not actually featured in the tests, using online tutorials proved much more helpful to me.

I bought this to help pass the numeracy test - so cannot comment on the literacy section. Much better than the other book (the smaller blue one). It worked - I passed!
