3.0 out of 5 stars Useful, if taken with a pinch of salt, 30 Mar 2004
By S. Johnston "the_jossman" (Oxford, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I used this book to sucessfully navigate myself through the initial stages of the Faststream process. Whilst providing plentiful examples to practice on, especially compared to the tiny booklet provided by Faststream's recruitment agency, it falls down on two counts. First, not enough explanation is given to the answers, especially as regards the Analysis of Information test. Second, and more importantly, some of the answers provided are incorrect. This is, in some cases, due to the fact that some of the questions have one or more answer. Others are due the total ambiguity of some of the questions. The numerical test question about holiday bookings is a case in point. Anyone who has booked package holidays in the past will see what I mean.

Despite these flaws, I will give this book a '3' as it does really help you get into the swing of doing these questions. Just be sure that the book is not wrong when you mark your answers...

1.0 out of 5 stars Woefully inadequate, 9 Feb 2003
This slim volume purports to tell you "How to pass the Civil Service Qualifying Tests", but it is woefully inadequate for this purpose.

The first chapter is taken up with describing the structure of the Civil Service and the sorts of jobs which are done by staff at the different entry-level grades. This information is both scanty (the Civil Service department to which you are applying, or Capita RAS if they are handling the recruitment for the vacancy you are interested in, will provide far more informative and comprehensive literature) and superfluous (if you have got to the stage of buying a book to help you prepare for tests, you will probably have already decided which type of vacancy you are applying for).

I imagine that most people who buy this book do so to help them prepare for the Fast Stream tests. There is only one chapter dedicated to this and several of the tests it describes no longer seem to be in use in the Fast Stream recruitment process in the same format. There are only a few practice questions of each type, and no explanation is offered alongside the answers given. If you get a question wrong, it may be difficult to work out why you got it wrong and why the answer given by the author is the correct one. This is very frustrating and does not serve to make you feel that studying the book is doing anything to improve your performance. In one instance, the answer to a question was given as option 'F', but in the question section there was no box allowing you to tick 'F' as your answer.

To be quite frank, this book is a waste of money. Far more helpful are the practice questions and advice given on the Fast Stream website and the literature sent out with your invitation to the tests. The author does suggest trying to get hold of past papers through university careers services, and this piece of advice is perhaps the only useful thing about this book.

3.0 out of 5 stars Essential but with shortcomings, 13 Sep 2003
By A Customer
This book would be better entitled "(How to) Practice for the Civil Service Qualifying Tests". I am using this book with a view to taking the Faststream Qualifying Test. While it offers a good number of essential practice questions and answers, and also provides advice on practicing for, and taking, the tests, it has shortcomings. It does not offer full explanations for most of the answers to the test questions (unlike the obligatory Practice Qualifying Test downloadable from the Faststream website once you have registered). It does not offer any insight into the "rules of the game" implict in the various types of question. It does not offer any 'quick tips' for identifying and answering various types of question. There are probably good commercial reasons for this. And indeed HM Govt may well require that this the case. But the content falls short of the promise of the title. Nevertheless, you'll need to buy it anyway - for all those extra pratcice questions.
