Product Description

Manufacturer's Description

For managing your partitions - securely and reliably

O&O PartitionManager is designed in a way very similar to the Windows Disk Manager but includes a number of advanced functions such as an option for changing the size of a partition or moving it to another location. The integration of our multiple award winning O&O SafeErase for deleting the data you no longer need, truly makes this product the only one of its kind.

Supports all disk types

Our basic prerequisite during the development of O&O PartitonManager into a professional disk manager was the importance we placed on ensuring comprehensive disk support. In addition to MBR disks, the program is able to identify and support dynamic and GPT disks, USB Sticks, and memory cards. All of these can be used for creating and converting various types of disks. An example of this would be your creating dynamic disks out of basic disks and then further converting them into dynamic or "spanned" volumes with just a few clicks of the mouse.

The program can also be started under Windows PE

Thanks to the Start CD - the only one of its kind in the world - running its very own mini-operating system based on Windows PE, you'll be able to use O&O Partition Manager without having to rely on your own Windows operating system. The Windows driver contained in Windows PE is a guarantee that you will always have access to your hardware. There'll also be no problem if an important driver is missing because O&O DriverLoader will be able to load it for you. Having Windows PE as its foundation gives O&O PartitionManager unlimited possibilities to help you make changes in your hard disk configurations.

Change system partitions with the Start-CD

The usual disk manager programs provide only limited possibilities for changing system partitions. They normally require restarting the computer and then working in native mode, which denies you the chance to get directly involved because the processes must be run without user interaction. The Start CD from O&O PartitionManager, on the other hand, is based on Windows PE. As a result of this, you'll be able to extend, shrink or move system partitions without any restrictions - irrespective of their data volume - and you can do it very conveniently and easily.

Change the size of a partition

The size of a partition can be changed according to its size and amount of data allocation. You could, for example, divide a large partition into several smaller ones by first shrinking it down to the smallest size and then allocating the freed space among a number of small partitions. You can create a large partition by first buffering the smaller partitions, then, after extending the original partition into a larger one, you can restore the buffered data.

Delete data securely

When you delete data, you make it "invisible" to the system. Your data remain, however, present on your hard disk. Great caution is required when you're looking to pass along or sell your computer because data spies will be able to easily reconstruct your private and professional data by using commercially available data recovery software like O&O DiskRecovery. If you want to be sure that your data is really permanently deleted, use the integrated delete function from O&O SafeErase. Not even specialized data recovery software will be able to restore any of this data. In the same way, entire drives or free disk space can also be easily deleted.

Made in Germany.Made in Berlin

All O&O products are developed and administered in Berlin. O&O PartitionManager was originally only available as a component in our versatile O&O BlueCon 7. As a result of overwhelming demand, we have now decided to market the product individually and hope our O&O PartitionManager will make it easier for you at work on a home PC or on the job. We take your concerns as a customer very seriously because we know just how important your data is for you. And we have been doing this for over ten years!

I bought this to replace my outdated PowerQest Partition Magic which has served me well for years!,but dosen't support latest computers or OS's. For the price I thought I'd give it a go The interface is a lot different but I soon got used to it and it worked great,installs easily in Vista and also boots from disc if needed,a good product and price!

A waste of money 18 April 2010
The internal disk on my aging PC was partitioned on delivery with a 20GB System (C:) drive, and a 90GB D: drive. I have got a terabyte of additional disk space hooked up, but the system drive has been close to bursting for some time, and currently has on 500MB free, so I decided to bite the bullet and repartition to give it a bit more room to breathe. My plan was to remove 10GB from the D: drive and add it on to the C: drive. I have no problems with reconfiguring the BIOS to boot from the Start CD, so I decided to give O&O Partion Manager 2 a shot. However, I have encountered a number of issues with this product, and would advise anybody in the market for decent partioning software to avoid it like the plague.

Issue #1
========
The first surprise came as soon as I opened Amazon's packaging, because everything on the outside of the box was written in German. OK, it's a German product, but if it's coming to the UK, they could at least make the effort to package it as such.

Issue #2
========
On removing the shrink wrapping and opening the box, I discovered that the included manual was also written in German, with no English alternative. However, 5 minutes with Google got me an English PDF file of the manual, which I was able to download and print out. Which brings me to....

Issue #3
========
It wasn't until reading the manual that I discovered that for safest operation, O&O Disk Imaging software needs to be used to backup the disk prior to changing the partitions. Fair enough - taking backups is always sensible and advisable, but if it is required, it ought to be included as part of the package.

Issue #4
========
The manual assumes a large degree of foreknowledge about windows disk partitions, and has no information about how a drive should be partitioned, so having searched for the manual in English, I found myself working by trial and error anyway. First task was to shrink the D drive. I backed it up manually, as I know what was on it, then booted up the PC from the start disk. This proved easy enough, and the Start CD loads in it's own version of Windows, with Partition Manager the only item on the desktop. Partition Manager 2 has a display not disimilar to Windows own partition management system, so having started the program, I selected drive D: and chose the option to change the size of the Volume. This brings up a display showing the minimum and maximum volume size, plus two modifiable fields reading "Beginning of Volume", which I took to mean the point on the disk where the volume should begin, and "Volume Size", which is rather more obviously the required size of the volume. The minimum and maximum volume sizes both read 90GB, and it wouldn't let me amend either of the other two fields. There was an option at the bottom of the window to "Optimize the minimal size of the volume", which basically seems to mean "defragment the drive", so I gave this a go. After defragmenting, the minimum and maximum fields read 70GB and 90GB respectively, so I was able to add 10GB to the "Beginning of Volume" field, and subtract 10GB from the "Volume Size" field. I kicked it off, and after a couple of hours, the job was complete.

Issue #5
========
Had to repeat the same task on the C: drive, this time adding 10GB to the volume size. I kicked off the defrag, and waited. Some 16 hours later, I was still waiting. The defragmentation had been sitting at 94% complete for several hours, and the only indication that anything was happening was that the disk was chattering away and the light on it was going on and off. A graphic display indicating what is happening would be useful just to confirm that something useful is actually going on. Having decided that 16 hours was an excessive amount of time to defrag a 20GB disk, I decided to exit Partition Manager 2 - there is no option to stop once started, and so no way of knowing that it is completing the task safely. Having selected "Exit" from the File Menu, the whole machine hung, and I had to force a reboot.

Issue #6
========
I decided at this point I should go back into Windows to confirm that all was OK. However, when I reopened Windows, I found that drive D: (the one that had appeared to be amended relatively smoothly) could not be opened, and I had to reformat it from within Windows. Fortunately, I had made a backup, and was able to restore everything relatively quickly, but I have decided that I do not want to use Partition Manager 2 to enlarge my system drive, just in case.

In short, this software completely and utterly FAILED to do what was required of it, and lost a significant amount of data in the process. I cannot recommend it at all.
