Great Performance at Royal Danish Opera 1 Feb. 2015
By Greg Smith - Published on Amazon.com
When I was half way through the first act of this opera disc by Royal Danish Opera, I wasn't sure if I would give it a 4 or a 5. I was enjoying all the characters, except for Partenope, the leading lady, played by Inger Dam-Jensen. She was singing with just too much vibrato for my liking. At the end of Act 1, I decided to compare her rendering of L'Amor ed il Destin with a recording I have of the same aria sung by Sandrine Piau, on her CD "Haendel Opera Seria". Piau is definitely much better, with her characteristic agility, clarity, and the utmost precision with which she hits the top notes.

I must say though, that as the opera progressed, Dam-Jensen seemed to warm up, and by the end, she was singing with noticeably less vibrato, and I was actually enjoying her singing. Dam-Jensen is certainly a great actress, as are all the other singers!

I thoroughly enjoyed all the other participants. Andreas Scholl, Christophe Dumaux, and Tuva Semmingsen, of whom I had not heard until this recording, were my favourites. I have since listened to some other recordings by Semmingsen, and I think she has a pleasingly pure and sensitive approach to Baroque music.

I enjoyed the staging, props and the costumes. The setting for this performance is obviously more modern than that intended when the opera was written, but who cares about that? I am not hung up about modernised settings, as long as there is nothing that blatantly distracts one from the point of the opera. I suspect that Negrin intended the period to be nondescript, as some of the costumes are almost present day, while the carrying of swords is obviously not.

I have one minor complaint, and that is about the placing of the microphones. There were occasionally very noticeable changes of recording level as some of the characters moved around the stage.

All in all, I thoroughly enjoyed this recording, and will definitely play it again from time to time.
