Influential, seminal, visionaries. The Television Personalities have been making records for over 25 years. And almost no one has paid any attention.

But without them it's not that unreasonable that the world would never have got to hear the Jesus and Mary Chain, Primal Scream or Oasis, such was the effect the band and their label had on a young Alan McGee in the early 80's.

Their blend of diy punk and 60s psychedelia (musically and visually) inspired not just McGee but a wave of UK indie bands who began to lift alternative music out of it's goth/agit-punk rut and into more melodic territories.

At the helm was eccentric, 60s obsessive Dan Treacy - one of the nations most underrated songwriters, who told tales of swingin' London, hanging out with artists, poets and boys in paisley shirts.

This spans their entire career, from the early thrash of '14th Floor' and the brilliant satire of 'Part Time Punks'. One song 'I know where Syd Barrett lives' earned them a support slot on Dave Gilmour's solo tour in the eraly 80's - after the first gig, and a typically awful performance (in over a dozen gigs - I only saw one or two good shows) they were paid off and kicked out. Fame would always elude them.

Their highlight for me was the 'Mummy you're not watching me' from 1982 and two of the finest tunes they wrote make this compilation - 'Magnificent Dreams' and the gorgeous plaintive 'If I could write poetry'. This thing is worth it for that song alone.

Their back catalogue is pretty big, and not that easy to get these days - some of the original vinyl fetches silly money on auction sites - and there are some odd track choices and some baffling omissions (my opinion).

But if you're a fan of mid 80s Indie Pop and want to hear one of the original and best of the early pioneers, it is an excellent introduction.

1982's album 'They Could Have Been Bigger Than The Beatles' never quite became prophetic.
