A fascinating book for lovers of English music, 18 May 2006
This review is from: Parrys of the Golden Vale: Background to a Genius (Paperback)
The revival of interest over the past 20 years in "lesser" English composers of the late 19th and 20th Centuries has led to more of their music being available on disc. There has also been an increase in biographical material.
This fascinating book details the background and family history of Charles Hubert Hastings Parry, the composer of the tune "Jerusalem" and along with C V Stanford one of the architects of the English musical renaissance.
It is of great interest, not just for what it tells us about Parry, but as a document tracing the development of a Victorian family.
The book is detailed and clearly a product of thorough and loving research. It fills in much of the background to Parry's life and explains much about his character.
I recommend that it be read in conjunction with the excellent biography of Parry by Professor Jeremy Dibble.
