Having taught Italian for more than 20 years, I found this book an invaluable supplementary tool. Students often spend hours trawling through newspapers to find the one or two expressions they need for their writing and discussion. The vocabulary is neatly sectioned allowing easy access. I liked the fact that it is less formulaic than many vocabulary texts which often merely list isolated words. I find it best used as an active vocabulary rather than merely a glossary of terms. It is Italian vocabulary as it is spoken and written in the country rather than the classroom.

I bought this on the strength of having used and loved "Mot a Mot", the French version of this series, throughout my studies. However, whereas "Mot a Mot" simply gives independent expressions, "Parola per Parola" seems to mainly reprint chunks of Italian texts, split up into sentences and translated. This means it's hard to pick your way through the chapters, because it's pretty much undigested and lacking structure. Also, the vocabulary is out of context so it's hard to be sure of the register and usage of the expressions. I think an advanced student of Italian would be better off reading an Italian newspaper or magazine instead and scanning it for new and handy expressions.

That said, it's better than a poke in the eye with a burnt stick, especially as it's not easy to find advanced vocabulary books. Like the other books in this series, it's themed around different topics, e.g. business, health, politics...

You should be aware that it's an advanced vocabulary book so it will be no help to beginners and probably not much use to intermediate students.

As an adult student of Italian I found this book to be excellent. Learning independent phrases is not that difficult but using them correctly, in context, is. Being able to follow a whole paragraph helped me to understand how the expressions work and these examples could then be used as a basis for variations. Individual words and phrases on everyday themes are listed first so that you can become familiar with the vocabulary before moving on to the sentences. These sentences clearly show how the words and phrases would be used by Italians but in a succinct manner ( in comparison with the verbosity of a lot of Italian journalism).

A useful little book, well worth the price. If you have studied enough Italian to be using the book you may already have met many of the words, but the thematic arrangement of the vocabulary lists creates mental tags and associations that help organise and improve your memory and understanding. The example sentences succeed in amplifying the context in which the vocabulary is used (though I occasionally doubted the accuracy of what they assert - e.g. I believe the profession of the prosecutor in criminal trials is not advocate but judge, contrary to what you might conclude from page 63 - but this is a relatively minor quibble given the overall merits of the format). The web links at the end of each section are helpful if you want to pursue the topic covered in that section. If you want a purely technical vocabulary, you will be better off with (for instance) the Oxford-Duden pictorial dictionary, but for raising your general comfort level when reading, writing or speaking Italian Mr Giovanazzi's book serves its purpose well. I liked his sensible Introduction (and I am not too shy to admit that I sometimes needed the help he gives with stress in polysyllables).

This is perfect for AS and A2 study. I am undertaking the Edexcel course and this book covers exactly the topics needed for the AS/A2 exams. I bought it relatively late into my AS year and wish I had got it earlier. It has chunks and separate words, relating to topics such as environment, the world of work world concerns etc. It also has good sections on phrases to express your opinion - something we seem to spend all out time doing in the AS year! I am going to buy the new version, which is published next month ready for my A2 year
