Product Description

Product Description

Revealing the secret world of one of Britain's highest security jails as no one on the outside could possibly imagine, Norman Parker has spent over half his life in prison. He was released from prison after 23 continuous years in prison. From his arrival in Parkhurst in the early 1970s as a category-A prisoner, he mixed with some of Britain's hardest cases. Parkhurst is immensely tough. But Norman Parker has one special quality that helped sustain him there - he is a natural observer of the human condition. There at close quarters he encountered: gangsters, such as Reg and Ron Kray and Eddie Richardson; armed robbers, including Great Train Robber Buster Edwards; characters such as Billy G, a well-known London club owner who went robbing with John McVicar; and "Lambo" Rony Lambrianou of the Krays, as well as a host of others who would prove that Parkhurst itself was such a dangerous place that you had to watch out for your life.

5.0 out of 5 stars A classic in every sense., 3 Nov 2002
By Mr. R. Ellor "Roy Ellor" (Salford, United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Norman Parker has written three books to date, all three of which I have thoroughly enjoyed.

Parkhurst Tales started it all off. Not a hand-wringing exercise in self-pity, but a truly engrossing account of the people and situations around him in the jail. Norman is an expert in telling the stories of other people, and to me has definitely lost his way in life. His true vocation should have been author and not murderer. The man writes in an easily read style, and relates the stories he tells in clear and concise terms. However horrifying these tales might be.

Essential reading.

4.0 out of 5 stars Well worth reading, both entertaining and funny, 13 April 2001
By A Customer
Parkhurst tales is a very funny book and well worth the buying if you are looking for a fairly light read. I agree with the previous reviewer in saying that it does not offer much of an insight into the prison sytem, however that is not what this book is about. It is a series of amusing annecdotes rather than a blow-by-blow account of his time in prison This is a very entertaining book and I shall certainly buy the sequel.

3.0 out of 5 stars An interesting book, could be more detailed, 20 May 1999
By A Customer
Norman Parker takes us into the depths of Parkhurst and other prisons and reveals a few anecdotes. I couldn't help but feel, whilst reading the book, that a bit more information about life in prison would have been helpful to those of us who haven't had the oppurtunity of spending time as guests of the state. Whilst it is fairly well written, it is easily understandable to all, with a full glossary provided for those not familiar with prison language. Worth the read.
