This really is a great pen. I was unsure as to whether I wanted it due to the lack of reviews. I previously owned many cheap parker pens (the likes of IM) but decided to buy a nice one for my 18th, so this review is in comparison to them.

The looks: The pen its self is very nice. The silver is slightly less shiny than that on the photo but the golden nib is very shiny. It looks perfect while its open - similar to the photo, but when it is closed it lacks a bit of gold - giving it quite a dull look and not making it stand out: In this aspect I prefered the "waterman expert gold and black laquer".

The feel: I really like weighted pens: this is one of them. It is not as heavy as the IM but I feel it has a preferable weight. It is fairly smooth to the feel considering that it is a chiseled pen. Although the laquer does not completely fill the "gaps created by the chisling of the silver as I expected it to do. I think I prefer it this way - it is what makes the pen special.

The writing experience: This is the reason you buy this pen. I am unsure as to whether it performs better than the othe sonnets but it is just perfect. You need to apply no pressure at all and it writes extremely smoothly. You can not compare this pen to the paker IM's as those 'scratch' the paper - even though they are nice to write with. I also owned a "waterman expert gold and black laquer" temporarily - that wrote on the paper without scratching it (unlike the IM's). However; the sonnet doesnt feel as if it is writing on the paper. It is almost as if it is flaoting on it.

Cons: The pen, at closer examination, was chipped on the silver surface. This was very clear on one spot and less obvious on three others. For a £160 pen this is not acceptable.

What a gorgeous and timelessly classic pen this is. I had been wanting this for a long times as I was given wrongly a sterling Parker 75 many years back!
Just as other gold nib Sonnet, it writes beautifully, wet and smooth and virtually with no line variation. Consistent and never skip (thus far). It makes me a very happy man with this purchase.

I'm a left hander and used to have a very nice waterman til I dropped it in work and killed the nib. I bought this one after trying cheaper ink pens and a few designated left hander pens.

This has so far been perfect...nice size and shape for my hand. Writes very well with the left hand. Also nibs resumes writing quickly on a monday after a weekend of not using it. Comes with an ink converter so can use the specific colour that I use!

This pen comes with a medium nib. That was what I wanted to know when I ordered this pen.

The other thing I wanted to know was how smooth is it to write with.

First, the nib flexes slightly if you press down as you write, which means you can make the line fatter depending on how you press as you write. I will have a good play with that while I am bored in a lecture.

Secondly, the nib has a slight, very slight amount, of scratch to it. It is not uber smooth like my Waterman Carenes or Parker 61, but this pen costs under 40 pounds and for that I think this pen is a bargain. I hope to reduce the scratch as I write with it. This is minor, I like smooth pens and I am happy to write with this pen.

It is far smoother than my Parker Rialto Matt Black medium pen I have tried to use for years, which also has a steel nib.

The stainless steel of the cap and badge is another reason to get this pen if you use it daily. It may not look like the best pen in the world, but the steel is hard wearing and there is no paint to get scratched off leaving chip marks in the paint finish.

The pen comes with a piston convertor, so I wasted money buying another convertor to use with bottled ink. There is also a cartridge included in the box.

You can remove the nibs very easily with these pens and change them. Turn the nib and grip the black part of the pen beneath the barrel, so the nib unit pops out, and replacement nibs can be screwed right back in.

To sum up, I think this Parker Sonnet is a bargain for under 40 pounds, and it writes nicely. It might not have the wow factor of a fancy paint job, but the pen will look like new for longer due to the steel exterior.

This is a gorgeous pen. Features a lovely brushed metal finish on barrel and cap. Nice secure fit and click as the cap locks and opens. Beautiful looking pen - gloss black plastic and old-fashioned large nib reminiscent of classics like the Duofold.

I've tried the fine and medium nibs. The medium is much more suitable for my handwriting and is what I currently use. It's a pleasure to write with and once primed, the ink flow is superb using cartridges or pipette. I never have to try to improve the ink flow by flicking the nib or dipping into ink - it just stays as it should.

I would advise on first purchase, take a cartridge, fit into the nib and literally squeeze the cartridge between finger and thumb. Parker cartridges are quite firm so you will have to squeeze quite hard. After a few squeezes, the ink will run down the feeder fins on the underside of the nib and into the groove on the nib itself. Squeeze a couple of drops of ink onto paper or tissue. Your pen is now primed. You may want to fit a fresh cartridge (or fill up your pipette) as the cartridge will be dented.

You will then be ready to go and just enjoy your new pen as it responds to your unique handwriting.

Very highly recommended.
