I just use a standard adjustable spanner as you need to use a chain whip with the other hand in the opposite direction or the freewheel will stop it unfastening

There is a hole in the base. However, I removed the axle when I took my cassette off so I don't know if that's what the hole is for.

Measuring the hexagonal head with a gauge, it's a shade over 25mm (25.3mm) and, somewhat surprisingly in this metric age, spot on 1 inch. I have used an adjustable spanner! It has a central hole but this is round not square so as to fit a ratchet wrench.
