Product Description

Product Description

Desperate to play Juliet, Nellie (18) leaves the soggy wilds of rural Ireland and heads off to Paris. She’s convinced the City of Love and Light will recognize her acting talent and transform her life. She’s in for a hell of a shock on all fronts. Because Paris is the Pits when: her step-granny is having more fun in the City of Dreams; her best friends are all losers or artistic loonies; her French lover goes AWOL; she’s understudy to a corpse instead of playing Shakespeare’s Juliet and the dog’s quarters in Kerry are more elegant than her Parisian pad. But Paris always, always delivers – and Nellie is staying put until it does!

Paris is the Pits & Nellie Flanagan is a scream 22 Jan 2008
By Julian De Wette - Published on Amazon.com
Why keep Nellie Flanagan on the Irish Sausage detail when she has much better cuisine waiting for her in Paris? From Dun-mo-Croi, Dublin is a nagging intermediate stop for this 18-year old who yearns for the stardom Paris (and ultimately Broadway) offers. The road to the bright lights is littered with obstacles and human dross conspiring to deny Nellie her break -- and her quest takes her through flames that devour nylon curtains and grunts of the needy who wear away the feet of saints with their kisses and tears. Then relief, when a customer who searches for a bra to cover unreasonably-sized appendages gets her the sack. This reader is starved for more of "Paris is the Pits." Bring on the foie gras. "My prayers were heard. I didn't die from depression. They fired me from Tipps." 24 Feb 2008
By R. Kyle - Published on Amazon.com
I learned two lessons from this excerpt. Never buy anything from Tipps and don't read this excerpt with anything in your mouth.

Irish lass, Nellis Flannigan wants to be an actress. She's grown up in a a town of less than 2000 and she's ready to move up in the world and play Shakespeare, but time's running out--she's 19 and they don't cast Juliet much older than that. But, just in case she gets too old for that role, she's also studying for Shylock. I'd really like to see this version of "Merchant of Venice." I have no clue who they'd cast as Portia with Nellie as Shylock, but it'd be a riot.

After getting fired from Tipps, she's decided to go to Paris and she's asked her parents for the funds. Her Mom had secretarial school in mind--she wanted her to have a 'nice' life and Paris, well:

"But stuff like me going to Paris to be an actress is in the realm of the Pope having his belly button pierced and tangoing out the Mass."

Sure and you can hear the brogue in this excerpt. It's funny. Nellie's so young and so in love with her dream and her family--especially Aunt Nora, is a riot. This excerpt is well worth reading for the laugh value of the descriptions of Tipps merchandise alone.

I was a bit confused on when the infamous firing actually took place, but the general facts of the story are there. I'd still be reading if the excerpt wasn't over.

I'll raise a glass of stout tea to Brigitte Downey for her ABNA Top 100 position and offer her an Irish blessing for success.

A funny start for Nellie Flannagan 24 Jan 2008
By James Berger - Published on Amazon.com
Brigitte Downey's latest work, "Paris Is The Pits" shows her to be a witty and engaging writer, once again. She had me chuckling at the exploits and mannerisms of her young heroine Nellie Flannagan, who tries her best to become a Shakespearean actress. The characters of her native Ireland are humorous and human in her descriptions. This promises to be another enjoyable trip through Europe, Ireland and the land of comedy with an accomplished writer.
