First of all, visit Rouen in the off-season. We went during late December having taken a train from Paris for the day. Got off at the station and holy cow, there was almost no-one around. Now when you get off the train in Rouen, wander over to the tourist desk and in your best broken Franglaise demand three things: 1) a map of the city, 2) ask them why the hell they don't speak better English. (Actually I speak French). 3) help from the American Embassy after your butt has been busted for acting like a typical arrogant American. The map you'll receive from the tourist is office is all you need. It is far more compact and precise than this little darling. Rouen, (known as the city of spires) like Dijon, is an absolutely fabulous place to visit. More historical things to see than you could shake an allied air raid at. The historical part of the city is very easy to walk, an incredible number of cathedrals/churches/museums. Most amazing is the site where Joan of Arc was burned (actually died of smoke inhalation). This site is so mundane, yet so historic. (Oh, we've been to France a number of times and there are far, far fewer jerks per square foot there than I will find in the Southern California beach city were I live).
