Book Description

3 Jan 2012 Michelin Guides

2.0 out of 5 stars Not even elitist 28 Aug 2012
Format:Paperback
This Paris guide contains just a fraction of the Paris hotels in the Michelin France red guide -- maybe one in eight, it was too depressing to add them up. For just the 8th arrondissement, as an example, there are four in the 2007 edition that I'm looking at (against about 60 in the red guide) and they don't include any of the top hotels.

What you have is a small number of hotels with blurb and a photograph. I'm reluctant to accuse the venerable Michelin of toadying to commercial interests but I'm afraid that's what it looks like!

2.0 out of 5 stars Rather Elitist 3 July 2012
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
The lay out is clear and the presentation is most attractive, but there's not a lot of information; very few places, especially hotels, are included. Those that are, are very expensive, as for the most part, are the restaurants. I found more establishments listed, both hotels and restaurants, with a wider price range, and consequently more to choose from in the Paris section of the Michelin Red Guide to France. By the way, it's in French.

5.0 out of 5 stars Indispensible for Independent Travelers 10 Oct 2012
By James Ellsworth - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
I have had a cultural/travel fascination with France for decades and I have relied on the Michelin Red Guide for just as long. Independent travelers who go beyond the major cities need an unbiased and up-to-date resource to find options for hotels and restaurants and this is still the best of the many sources I regularly use for my month in Europe. I have previously reviewed the Michelin Green Guides I have purchased and they are among the finest available for finding history and culture of cities and chateaus and for detailing the collections of fine museums but they only offer a smattering of lodging and dining options. That could suffice...until one reaches Paris and deciding where to stay becomes more complex. This guide really 'shines' in its coverage of Paris by arrondissment for dining and lodging. (There is no museum or other cultural information in this guide).

Outside of Paris...where we will spend five weeks in Alsace, Burgundy and Champagne...the 'go-to' guidebooks (even the Green Guides) offer small choice of places to investigate. I refer often to the Red Guide. These days, the information provided lists web sites: advance bookings or restaurant reservations are easily made from your own computer in advance of your trip. Using this guide as a 'finder', travelers can use the provided web addresses to check out prices and menus...even keeping current on the changes in menu for the season in which you might be traveling.

Independent travelers sometimes have a shelf full of guides, collected over several years, that they hope someday to use. That only works if the chef, for example, does not move on. I have returned to (even two-year-old) guides to find the name of a talented chef who is no longer at a venue or to find that the style of food has changed. I have avoided surprises by using the latest guide from Michelin to confirm my hotel and restaurant choices. This is especially important for travelers who 'homebase' in a city and plan day trips to other attractions.

Yes, this guide is in French. The French is simplified, entries use the same words and the kind of information one hopes for is repetitive. There are 'icons' that also transcend language to convey content but one has to be willing to keep the 'book mark' icon translator at hand when reading.. I am not a brilliant linguist but I can understand much of each entry because many of the words the editors have selected also have roots with which English speakers are familiar.

There is no more authoritative guide in publication that deals with lodging and dining and no other guide has professional inspectors working to company standards to rate places. If you are a traveler in 'la France profonde' this is a good investment. Possibly you will only 'pass this way' once in a lifetime. I don't want to leave lodging and dining to chance.
4.0 out of 5 stars Helpful for each district 28 April 2013
By Mary Rinaldi - Published on Amazon.com

Like the way that the book is broken down into districts. Reviews are dependable. Maps are particularly good because reviewed restaurants are marked. We are now in Paris and used the book to find places to eat daily.
