Book Description

Luxury items from centuries past are most often seen within museum settings, devoid of their original contexts and connotations. This groundbreaking book seeks to re-imagine objects from 18th-century Paris within their original context, showing how they were used in the daily routines of the elite members of society. Against the background of the reign of Louis XV (1723-1774) the chapters move chronologically from morning to night, covering topics as diverse as timekeeping, fashion and self-identity, domestic architecture, literature and art, and entertainment and socialising. By connecting the purposes, function, and beauty of these items, this volume makes a fascinating and important contribution to the study of a great period in French culture.

Review

"Editor and essayist Charissa Bremer-David . . . reveals much about the ideas and attitudes of 18th-century Parisian society through the magnificent relics it left behind. But be warned: These tales of the leisurely lives of French aristocrats, from their morning toilettes to their after-dark dalliances, may elicit pangs of envy."--"artinfo.com"

5.0 out of 5 stars Nice pictures and interesting material 8 Jan 2012

Got the book for Christmas and it made very good reading during the holidays. The text is informative, easy to read entertaining as well as educational. I wasn't sure what to expect since I was only able to view a few pages on Amazon, but I am glad I purchased it. The book is divided into 4 sections corresponding to morning, midday, afternoon and night. Within the 4 sections of the day the authors introduce us to the the life of aristocracy with the aid of beautiful photos and interesting text. If you are interested in 18th century (history, fashion, society, inventions and so on), then this book is a must because it touches on on these topics and more!
5.0 out of 5 stars A look inside the book 21 May 2013

Chap. 1 Life was governed by the clock: awakening, work, commerce, entertainment, eating, and sleeping. Ancient Greek/Roman fables about time were resurrected.

Chap. 2 The building boom was paid for by non-aristocrats. Multi-room homes, architectural plans for sale, designated private and public rooms, more and smaller rooms were all the latest fashion.

Chap. 3 It was fashionable to invite friends to watch adults get dressed, put on makeup, and show off expensive boxes containing makeup, applicators, and jewelry.

It is fun to see the items from the past, especially from this time frame. I just wish there were more photos of the objects.
