This recent live recording of a solo performance from the Théâtre de Châtelet in Paris captures the full mesmerising range of Richard Galliano s instrumental virtuosity. In his hands, the plaintive tones of the humble accordion have the potency of a cathedral organ and the delicacy of a flute. Galliano applies his arsenal of percussive clicks, flights of dexterity and the occasional wheezy chord to Round Midnight , Piazzolla s Oblivion and Erik Satie. Six Galliano originals reference chanson, aria and jazz, while rhythms vary from a featherlight waltz to the uptown tension of New York Tango . FOUR STARS --Financial Times
Solo accordion from Franco-Italian master Galliano, recorded live at the Théâtre du Châtelet in March this year. It s a carriage-trade set that takes a while to get going, and one can question how much the two Erik Satie Gnossiennes add. But from Galliano s own Bagatelle halfway through, everything suddenly takes off. Versions of Round Midnight , La Javanaise , Caruso and Oblivion are all outstanding, while the air, keys and bellows of the mighty instrument seem right there in the room with you. --Independent on Sunday
