JACK THE RIPPER'S BACK - AND HELL'S COMING WITH HIM.
In 1888, five women are brutally murdered in the East End of London. The killer is never caught. In 1996, four women die in similar circumstances, their corpses mutilated. Again, the murderer escapes justice. In 2011, Charlie Faultless returns to the East End after 15 years in exile. His mother and girlfriend were victims of the 1996 killings and he has returned to confront his dark past. But his homecoming coincides with further atrocities, and the reappearance of history's most terrifying serial killer: JACK THE RIPPER. With old hatreds simmering, Charlie faces violent ordeals at the hands of men fuelled by revenge and demons raised from hell. And as Jack The Ripper's identity is revealed, the truth about Charlie's past also comes to light - and it is equally shocking.

I bought this book, because I am a huge fan of Thomas Emson, even though Pandemonium Road was a bit of a let down I was really looking forward to reading this book. I wasn't dissapointed. I got so involved in the book I was able to read it in 3 days. The story is set on an estate in London and is about murders that are happening, which are similar to murders in the past and it ties into Jack the Ripper.I personally really enjoyed the story line and found the ending a surpising twist. Thomas Emson is an amazing writter and creates characters who have bad or evil in them such as Charlie faultless and makes the reader connect with them and wants them to win. This is another brilliant book by Thomas Emson, maybe not as good as Skarlet but for any Thomas Emson fan or a fan of horror book this is a must read.
What could be better than a slightly supernatural horror novel based around Jack the Ripper? Well actually that sounds great....unfortunately this isn't quite it. It all starts off fine. With scenes set in 1888 and the original Jack the Ripper doing his worst, then a copycat or something more deadly in 1996 and finally in present day London a revival of the Ripper. Emson's writing can create dark, tense scenes where the atmosphere seeps off the page. This is put to best use at the start of Pariah when Jack the Ripper's victims are trying to evade his clutches. Even in the 2011 London with local bad boy Charlie Faultless (nice name) returning to uncover the killer of his mother there is a pervading sense of low level urban horror - the kind found on rough estates; with petty criminals and disproportionate violence. So far so good then. However as 'Jack' turns out to be a disemobodied version of original evil, who actually would quite like a body and freedom to infect the world with more terror, it all gets a bit silly. I have to admit to being disappointed. I've enjoyed all of Emson's previous novels as good, urban-set horror fiction is something difficult to find these days. This had lots of potential and Jack the Ripper is the perfect subject for horror novels, however for me this just doesn't work. The characters are good but not that involving, the writing is still nice and tense but the plot in the last quarter just feels like a letdown. I really wanted to like this a lot more than I did. If this is the first Emson book you are planning on reading then perhaps start elsewhere.
