A very positive read,
By A Customer
This review is from: Parents' Education as Autism Therapists: Applied Behaviour Analysis in Context (Paperback)
The Peat group in Ireland reveal here an ongoing success story. By educating parents as ABA therapists for their own 'special' children they provide invaluable support to a minority group often overlooked.ABA principles which have evolved greatly over the past 30 years, are introduced and discussed. Reasons are given for its choice as a therapy and myths are dispelled. Stress is made on the importance of continual data collection, and examples are given to illustrate specific ABA programmes which have been used by the group. A large part of the book concentrates on 3 year old Colin's first year of treatment which involves his whole family. However Laura, his mum is the main therapist and she meticulously details all the trials of the 17 targets, and Colin's progress is shared and evaluated with the reader. Great insight is given into how a parent can help design and carry out an ABA programme to suit the specific needs of their child. This is a very readable book with jargon explained in layman's terms, and is a must for anybody considering ABA as a therapy.

Not Great,

It looks like the authors have done some great work in Northern Ireland helping parents to set up their ABA programs, they have just failed to translate this into a useful book. This is not a book which reads smoothly from beginning to end, looks to me more like a collection of published papers from different authors. It needs some serious editing to make it readable. As a parent of an autistic boy who wanted to embark on an ABA program I found that it did not do what it said on the tin. A better book by far is 'The Verbal Behavior Approach: How to Teach Children with Autism and Related Disorders' by Mary Barbera; Tracy Rasmussen

Home therapy,

This review is from: Parents' Education as Autism Therapists: Applied Behaviour Analysis in Context (Paperback)
This book is great and "user friendly" for the parent who is looking to start a home program. Better info and easier to digest than many of the books available. An excellent first book if you are thinking of ABA for your child.
