5.0 out of 5 stars Throw away your guilt!, 24 Nov 2003
By Ann Leahy (Australia) - See all my reviews
This is the most sensible and useful parenting book that I have read (and as a bookseller I have read loads of them). As a 42 year old mother of an adorable but all consuming 3.5 year old boy, I found every page reassuring. I had a difficult time in the first year with my child in terms of coping with exhaustion and severe sleep deprivation and did not even countenance the thought of another child until recently, when I have been coping well, and am happy with myself, work and my child. Personally I have not felt the need for another, but I had started to worry that perhaps my son needed a sibling. After reading this book I have thrown away my guilt, and now I realise what I had privately thought all along to be true, that an only child can be as happy and well adjusted (perhaps more so) than one with siblings. I have not had pressure from my own parents to add to my family, but from my mothers’ group and friends. “He’ll have no-one to play with on holidays” they say to me, or “He will be spoilt and too self centered”. I had started to worry about this and even had a few attempts at getting pregnant again. To my relief they were not successful, as I know in myself that another would be too difficult for me, physically, financially and emotionally. Susan Newman says it’s better to raise one well than spread yourself too thin. All my private concerns are addressed in this book. Not only does Susan Newman methodically disprove all the myths that surround only children, but there are pages of practical advice on how not to over-indulge your child, and maintain a life of your own.

5.0 out of 5 stars THE reference book for parents who need reassurance, 20 Aug 1999
By A Customer
THE reference book for parents who need reassurance that their decision is a good one, both for their child and for themselves. In real life, having an only child is never presented as a choice, but rather as something that is imposed on you by mother nature or exterior factors. In this book, I realized there are so many advantages in parenting an only child, and for my child too. I had never thought of some things Susan Newman tells in her book, so it's great for asking yourself the right questions if you are considering having an only.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful, informative book, 17 Sep 1998
By A Customer
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. My husband and I recently decided to make our daughter our "only". He, being an only, of course is confident that all will be fine but I needed some reassurance and data to make me feel more comfortable. This book not only made me feel very comfortable and happy about our decision but also made me aware of the different pitfalls that may occur in the one child family - very avoidable pitfalls if aware of them before they occur. I highly recommend this book to any parents of only children or those contemplating the decision.
