Book Description

Jun 2003
In 'Parenting By Heart', Pinky McKay encourages parents to trust their own instincts, and connection with their child. Practical advice is offered with Pinky's trademark humour and covers birth choices, breastfeeding, postnatal depression, sleep, crying, gentle discipline and building self esteem (yours and your child's!). Along the way, Pinky gives excellent advice for dealing with unwanted inquiries from family and friends, redefines the good/bad baby continuum to 'real' babies and considers where the relationship with your partner fits into all this activity!

Parenting By Heart will show you how to explore your options and take charge. Most of all, lighten up, laugh, enjoy! Trust yourself. Trust your child. Trust your feelings.

From the Author

When you follow your heart, rather than a single parenting method, you seldom fit neatly into a stereotype. I have sampled various options from the rich smorgasbord of childrearing 'methods' to form my own rich collage, which has often meant going against popular opinion. At times, following your heart can also result in challenges as you confront the wider world: I have rocked up to weekend workshops with creative directors from some of Melbourne's top advertising agencies -and a two year old at my breast. These people were more familiar with the association between breasts and fast cars!
To parent against the mainstream takes courage (and a deaf ear). To care for children and to nourish their identities requires a strong sense of self.
Because there are as many ways of caring as there are families, and because often sharing another's experience validates your own, Parenting by Heart includes the voices of other parents (mothers AND fathers) who share their feelings - of joy, sadness, fear, frustration, hope and humour.
I have received overwhelming feedback from parents who say thankyou for giving me 'permission' to respond to my child. I dont know which is sadder -that parents feel they need 'permission' or that there is so much rigid advice undermining parental confidence.

Parenting By Heart is a funny, touching and realistic look at parenting. Pinky discusses how not to be cowed by expert opinion or questionable survey results. She draws off the experiences of numerous women of how they overcame problems with their children by responding from the heart, and by doing what they felt was right rather than what they were told was right.
Pinky gives mothers the courage to go against the grain of public opinion in finding the best way to parent their own, very unique children.

I loved Pinkys book Sleep like a baby so I knew I would love this book. It's a great common sense read that covers off on so many of the topics no one writes about. There are so may books on pregnancy but very few good books on life when you go home from hospital. This book gives me a greater confidence in being a mum

I went along with my sister, who is a first time mum, to hear Pinky speak recently and I was very impressed. Coming from a medical background (I am a female GP) and one that is very paternalistic, I found her approach refreshing and I now recommend this book to all my antenatal patients. Pinky advocates doing what feels right for you and your baby and listening to what your baby needs. Removing all the "rules" of parenting and literally parenting by what your heart and gut tell you, you are less likely to fall short of your own expectations. From antenatal preparation through to the various aspects of infant care, Pinky provides reassurance for mums who are confused by the conflicting advice provided by well-meaning outsiders but also provides resources for those who struggle. I recommend this to all parents and parents-to-be.
