5.0 out of 5 stars A Lonely Planet Guide to Education...., 2 April 2009
By Ms. Alison D. Murphy (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Like a Lonely Planet guide, this is the best book on the market for those parents and guardians looking to get their kids into the best local schools. You will find lots of tips, some of them counter intuitive ( yes, it is sometimes better to state that your child has 'special needs', whatever you might feel about a 'stigma' ), to aid your navigation through the educational jungle, and help secure the best school for your child or children. Buy this book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Parent Power by Francis Gilbert, 1 April 2009
This book is a true godsend. Finally someone who is 'real deal' for advice on education. Francis has a child, has worked in both Private schools, top State and bottom State. He is consulted widely on his intergrity, simple strategies to get your child into the right schools, what to expect and how to ensure the school are at the top of their game at all levels. His 'truth' speaking is a breath of fresh air on a matter all parents are very vulnerable around. On Private education its wonderful to finally see someone state, be prepared to 'spend spend spend'. On getting into any school he advises simple stragies such as attend the school fayres, raffle prizes. Then real people comment on what worked for them and what didn't. Friends have wept at recognising their experiences, others have got their hands on my couple at the right time and managed to get their children the education they wanted for them and what they truly deserved. If there was a wiseman on getting children the best education in every community - it would Francis we all sought out. Thankfully he wrote the book for us. Almost therapy, gave me back my power to demand the best for my children in every school year and at every key moment. When you feel in control, you become in control. Thank you Francis Gilbert.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must for parents., 19 April 2009
I read the previous incarnation of this book - New School Rules - and thought it was a thoroughly good read. Although I am not a parent yet, or a teacher for that matter, I thought the book de-mystified the schooling process. As a practicing Muslim and an advocate of faith schools, I was pleased to read that Francis had favourable things to say about them. He is correct that if state funded, Islamic schools will be scrutinised at the same level as other schools and will have to follow the syllabus. Currently, private schools do not get the same level of scrutiny and that can be a problem sometimes. State funded secular schools seem to be failing some children and if religious schools perform better, why not encourage more? On the whole, this book is important for parents that want to map their kids schooling. It gives step-by-step instructions on what parents need to do to ensure their children get the education they need and deserve.
