Aimed at a young audience but hugely popular with children and adults alike, Pardon My Genie was devised and written by future Roberts Robots and Rentaghost creator Bob Block.

When a young shop assistant called Hal Adden casually tries to polish an old watering can - well, you can guess what happens! But the genie who appears turns out to be as rusty as the can he lives in; he's four thousand years old, and his magic doesn't always work as well as it should...

Ellis Jones plays Hal, with Roy Barraclough (Sez Les) starring as his long-suffering boss, hardware shop owner Mr Cobbledick, and Arthur White as the Genie. This second series of the memorably funny comedy, first screened in 1973, is available on DVD for the first time

Created and written by Bob Block (Rentaghost), this second and final series of the funny childrens comedy was originally broadcast in 1973. Following on from the previous year's first series, its basically a case of more of the same except for two changes: a new theme tune, and more importantly a change of personel, with Arthur White (David Jason's brother) stepping into the Genie's curly-toe slippers, which were vacated by Hugh Paddick following his departure after the first series. Although I missed Hugh Paddick's portrayal of the gently chaotic 4000 year-old Genie, Arthur White proves to be a more than adequate replacement.

The mad and daft humour continues, with hardware shop assistant Hal Adden (Ellis Jones) again giving the old watering can a good rub and conjuring up the Genie, who always takes his master's commands in a literal manner, which is a cue for a series of bizarre and embarrassing situations, with Hal's delightfully unaware and long-suffering boss Mr Cobbledick (Roy Barraclough) often on the receiving end. Because of the mayhem around him the poor fellow regularly consults a psychiatrist.

The performances from all involved are nicely understated, which lends a lovely warmth to this pleasingly innocent and charming series, which although intended for children is good fun for adults as well. The special effects may be dated but this merely adds to the overall charm of the show.

This complete second series features all 13 episodes, each running for around 25 minutes. As with the first series the colour picture and sound quality are good. No extras or subtitles.
