Review

'The book everyone is talking about' Belfast Telegraph 'A new bestseller... a must for those Interested in the 2nd World War' What's Happening 'Well worth reading. The author is particularly good at explaining why almost all who serve in the Regiment have such a fierce pride in all that it stands for.' The Guards Magazine

Product Description

Since their foundation during the Second World War, the Parachute Regiment has acquired a formidable reputation as tough, fearless soldiers. 'The Red Devils' have played a key role in many of the battles of the past sixty years - the capture of Sicily, the D-Day landing, the heroic but doomed attempt to capture the bridge at Arnhem. In the savage wars of 'peace' since the Second World War, the Paras have seen action all over the world - from Cyprus, Palestine, Egypt, Borneo and the Falklands to Bosnia. Their service in Northern Ireland has been surrounded by controversy - the events of 'Bloody Sunday' in Londonderry in 1972 are still the subject of fierce debate, and a continuing government inquiry. For his authoritative book, John Parker has gathered together the testimony of numerous veterans of the Parachute Regiment. Their first-hand accounts of the major events in their history make enthralling reading, bringing home the reality (and cruelty) of combat in a way no dry, official history could do. The events of 'Bloody Sunday' are seen through their eyes, and will re-ignite the controversy over what actually happened.

5.0 out of 5 stars Toughest Regiment, 7 Aug 2000
By A Customer
More books seem to be published on the Parachute Regiment than on any other. John Parker succeeds in making his 'different' because he draws upon excellent reminiscences of the men who served in the Regiment and several of their wives. Very understandably, he concentrates on the operational campaigns of greatest interest. One third of the book covers the Falklands War and Norther Ireland alone. Of particular interest is the section on Bloody Sunday, Parker's interviews reflect his thesis that the paras were used as political pawns rather than deployed as part of a strategic military operation. Makes for compelling reading.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book talking about the history of the paras, 18 May 2001
By A Customer
This book is great from cover to cover, it starts with a Prologue from Sara Jones the widow of 'H' Jones who won a VC in the falklands, the book talks about the history of the paras in world war two and all significant campaigns since then with lots of soldiers telling the story in their own words, at times it can be moving such as at the end talking about the death of a veteran para and shows that the paras are very much human anyone with an interest in the falklands the troubles in ireland will particually enjoy this due to the paras deep involvement here. Also at the end contains a useful how to get into the paras. This book is brilliant!
