I ordered this book having read a number of raving reviews for it. I certainly enjoyed reading it, but I didn't find it gripped me as much as other books in this category have in the past 12 months. I think the reason for me not enjoying this book as much as others have is possibly an age thing, though I can't be sure. I think Evie comes across as having a younger personality than the main characters in the other young adult paranormal books I've read over the past few months. Another reason may be that the first half of the book is mainly set in the IPCA rather than in the "real" world and I couldn't really get a feel for it.

I think Paranormalcy is definitely more suited to the younger readers and is best left to the teens. I know, I know... The book actually is aimed at the teenage market, but I also know that these kinds of books are more recently being read by those of us who left our teenage years behind some time ago.

Having said all that, I did enjoy reading Paranormalcy and it made me laugh in a few places (which is always a good thing). I liked the idea of Lend's character. he's certainly unique and I thought he made a refreshing change in this genre. Also, I read the book in 3 evenings, so that's always a good sign.

Paranormalcy is certainly different to many of the paranormal/urban fantasy books out at the moment, but it just wasn't for me. That said, I'm sure you'll make up your own mind. It's not a bad book, it's just not one of my favourites.

Before I begin, I want you all to look to the left of the page. See the cover? Now take a good, long look. Really take it in. *waits*. Now, tell me. You want the book don't you? I know you're interested...

Anyway, moving on. Evie is a unique paranormal hunter who can see past the paranormal creatures' glamours. Meaning, they cannot disguise themselves from her. Of course, being as unique as Evie is, IPCA had to sweep in an employ her. IPCA is the International Paranormal Containment Agency, which hires both humans and paranormals to bag and tag rogue paranormals. There is a huge variety of creatures in this book, ranging from vampires to hags, and their mythology is explained very well, even though their kind is not among the main characters of the book. Everything seems to be running smoothly until there's a break in in the IPCA headquarters, and then of course Evie has to get caught in the middle of the trouble with a certain shape shifter named Lend.

There's also a romantic subplot to this story which does not take over from the main storyline which I LOVE. I love that the focus is on the paranormal side of things rather than the main character's love interest(s).

Evie, our main protagonist, is a good choice for the lead role of this novel. She is headstrong, brave, witty and sarcastic - which, for me, adds a lot to her character - but she is also girly and she has a big interest in the normal human world.

Lend, the shape shifter Evie befriends, is a lovely character. I won't say too much about him in case I spoil anything, he is witty and has some very sarcastic comebacks but he is very sweet and, at times, comes across as quite innocent. This just proves that you do not need a bad boy character to love a book.

Evie was found abandoned as a toddler. After many foster homes and centers, the International Paranormal Containment Agency brought her to their home. And while her best friend was a mermaid, and her ex-boyfriend was a faerie, she always thought of herself as normal. But she could see through the paranormals' glamours to what they really were. And this was her job when she was sent out around the world to tag paranormals.

But now, suddenly, paranormals are dying and no one knows why. She meets a shapeshifter who she falls for and who helps her see what she really is and what her abilities are. And she soon realizes that her abilities might have a link to the deaths of the paranormals. Evie tries to find out how to stop these deaths and in the process discovers secrets that she never imagined.

PARANORMALCY was awesome! The first chapter title had me hooked (I read an ARC, so the chapter could always change, but I hope not). It was titled "Oh, Bite Me." Perfect!

I love characters who are sarcastic. And I love kick-butt girl characters who are also girly (If I ever need a weapon for something, I definitely want my own pink taser with rhinestones). And Evie is both. I just love, love, loved her! In fact, I kind of want to be her! She is just a strong character who also seems so real. I think she is one of my most favorite characters ever.

And Lend is awesome, too. What a paranormal power to have - to be able to change the way you look (Although if you can't really show your real self, I guess it could get old). And he was such a nice guy and so loving and supporting of Evie. I loved their relationship. It seemed to progress just right and nothing was too fast.

I even really liked the secondary characters.

Although I am a mum of 2 I do still enjoy a good YA book.
I was unsure of what I would think of this book a I had not heard much about it, but when I found it in a shop I decided to give it a try .. And I am glad I did.

I loved the sassy attitude that Evie had found her friendship with Lish very sweet.
I loved the chemistry she had with Lend, and was excited to read about a somewhat New Paranormal being. Yes there was Vampires and Werewolves in the book but they are more background characters.
I thought Evies 'obsession' with a certain t.v show and high school was funny, and her many ways to worry about hand holding was really quite sweet.
I also liked the whole 'glammer' idea. Its too easy to have everyone young and beautiful/handsome naturally, this was I was left remembering that Vampires really are dead and Wolves really are animals etc ..

I loved the story of Lends parentage, but was a little confused as to the point of some of the other secondary characters, but they all fit in with the story somehow.

Finally Im left with Reth .. Im on the fence with this guy. There was something that, to be totally honest, creeped me out about him.
I shuddered at the way he acted with Evie, the way he dismesed everyone as beneath him and the overall 'stalker' vibe he gave off.
I am honestly hoping that this is how I am supposed to think of him, and that I am not showing my age here lol.

Oh, I forgot about Vivian. Im assuming there will be a 2nd book as I feel I was left hanging with the whole 'Empty One' issue.
Personally though, I was getting a little Irked at the repetivness of Vivian calling Evie Stupid.

A great book with some great paranormalcy to it :P
